Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary

The initial holiday set up by Village Ways began in the heart of the secluded and remote Kumaon Hills, a day’s drive north-east of Delhi. Here, with Tibet to the north and Nepal to the east, the wooded hills and fertile valleys of the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary lie in the shadow of the great Himalayan peaks. Appreciative of the extra income, six tiny mountain villages – Risal, Satri, Gonap, Kathdhara, Dalar and Matkanya – were thrilled to be included and extend a warm welcome to Village Ways guests through their own unique approach.
These are close-knit, hard-working communities which provide accommodation and genuine hospitality in simple guesthouses. Each of these has been built in authentic style by local craftsmen using traditional materials such as local stone and mud mortar, catering for Western tastes where possible. A privately guided walking holiday here allows you to experience a timeless way of life in truly beautiful surroundings.

A guide's story

Hemu Upadhaya, a native of Binsar, had previously moved to Delhi to work as a labourer, but has since been able to return to his family home. Having joined Village Ways as a guide in 2006, he explains: “Now I can live at home and look after my family. I also have a chance to learn about birds and plants and meet new people.”
