Pioneers of slow, immersive travel for over 40 years

Back before slow travel was on the radar, Richard and Linda Hearn founded Inntravel on the belief that destinations are worth more than just passing through. And what better way than to walk – providing complete immersion, and, more importantly, time. Time to linger, time to enjoy a long lunch, a dip in the sea, a cake at the mountain hut, and a glass of wine from the winery you pass by.

This immersion includes the places you stay – be it family-run guesthouses, agriturismi where you dine on the land’s produce, boutique B&Bs that have a rich history linked to the destinations. It’s all part of the experience.

It still is today. Some of our holidays have been running for over 30 years – including the Catalan Coast and the Apennines. It’s our connection to these off-the-tourist-trail places, insider knowledge (we walk all our routes), and tried-and-tested itineraries that, in our eyes, make an Inntravel holiday different.

The Inntravel story

Richard & Linda Hearn founded Inntravel in 1984

From their home in Hovingham, North Yorkshire, they launched a programme of off-season short breaks to Northern France, staying in family-run auberges as well as our first winter holidays known as Winter-Inn.

From a kitchen table to an entire house, to a different house, and to a former barn. Inntravel has had many homes, but it’s stayed rooted in the heart of a community, in a setting reflective of our founders’ vision of bringing new life to little-known communities. We’re still based out of a converted barn in the middle of the glorious Howardian Hills – a nod to our beginnings over 40 years ago.

A big part of the Inntravel experience is staying somewhere special. We personally check all the hotels and guesthouses that form part of our holidays to make sure they, and in some cases, we’ve been working with them for decades (some as long as 30 years!).

We’re proud to have built up long-standing relationships with hoteliers across all our destinations. We use their expertise and knowledge on the ground to form our itineraries and know they will welcome all warmly (sometimes even with homemade chocolate cake!).7
