Why go walking in Spain & the Canary Islands?

Inntravel’s self-guided walking holidays in Spain – like all our holidays – are about getting to know the area. We encourage you to pause as often as you like – you’re not in a group, and have no luggage (we transfer it to the next carefully chosen hotel). So follow our reliable route notes at your own pace, and enjoy a walking holiday that's worth it. Step into the cool interior of a wayside church, watch a griffon vulture gliding on the thermals, amble through a medieval village… we help you discover the authentic side to Spain.

How our walking holidays in Spain are graded

Spain offers something for everyone when it comes to walking. Enjoy gentle strolls along the coast of Catalonia, more challenging hikes amid the peaks of the Pyrenees, or moderate-level rambles along the Camino de Santiago. To be sure of choosing the holiday that’s right for you, you should familiarise yourself with our grading system below.
  • Choose our gentle walking holiday along Catalonia's quietest coastline to enjoy relaxing strolls of approximately 12km per day. These lead you between the area's many beautiful seafront villages, with plenty of time left over for dips in the sea and leisurely lunches beside the Mediterranean.
  • We have a superb choice of grade 1-2 walking routes in Spain, by which we mean holidays ideal for the occasional walker: someone who's happy to take on around 5-15km each day, plus a limited amount of ascent and descent. These holidays explore idyllic Balearic Islands such as Ibiza and Menorca, rugged Canarian outposts including Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as many lesser-known corners of the mainland, such as the Cabo de Gata Natural Park or the timeless Aracena Sierra.
  • Expect to be challenged on our grade 2 Spanish walking holidays, given these involve regular ascents and descents as well as a real variety of terrain. Whether you choose to walk along the Camino de Santiago (our route follows the historic Portuguese Way), to unlock the secrets of Alicante's hidden mountains, or to descend from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean, you'll be treated to some spectacular views, on routes that typically extend between 10-15km.
  • Most of our grade 2-3 walking holidays in Spain can be found in the Canary Islands: on Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro. On these holidays, rugged terrain goes hand in hand with the satisfaction of reaching a high peak or spectacular viewpoint, and days typically range between 7-20km, with significant ascent and descent.
  • If a choice of routes is important to you, we'd recommend considering one of our more flexible walking holidays in Spain. These give you the option of differently graded routes – of which you can then take your pick. Decide between easy and moderate routes on our two walking holidays in Mallorca (one single-centre, the other itinerant), or between easy, moderate and challenging routes in the Grazalema Sierra and on the Canary Island of La Palma.

Spain walking holidays FAQs

  • Transfers as part of the holiday (as detailed) are included. You can either arrange your own flights to the start of your route or have us handle the booking for you, with an additional fee covering administration costs as part of our flight-booking service. The same applies to trains or ferries, depending on the situation. Our team can also arrange rail travel to Spain from the UK.

If you're walking between the Canary Islands, there will also be ferries between the three islands, so you won't need to worry about any of the logistical details. If your trip involves car hire, this will also be included.

  • If you're walking on rocky paths, pack boots with ankle support, or bring sturdy shoes for easier walks. Choose breathable clothes to stay cool in warm weather. Lightweight trousers or shorts will keep you comfy, along with socks that help prevent blisters. Don't forget a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Check the weather forecast to prepare for temperatures and conditions like rain or wind.
  • Most of Spain's hiking areas are at lower elevations, but some routes and national parks can take you to higher altitudes where altitude sickness may be a concern. Areas like the Sierra Nevada and Pyrenees can be more challenging. Especially if you are walking at heights above 2,500 metres. Note that with Inntravel, even our most mountainous routes won't reach these levels.
