Stretching from the spectacular Istrian Peninsula in the north, Croatia’s magnificent 1,700-kilometre coastline – especially the Dalmatian Coast and vast Kvarner Gulf – is perhaps the biggest draw, washed by cobalt-blue seas rich in marine life and peppered with hundreds of islands, ranging from tiny uninhabited islets to larger islands with medieval harbour towns. Yet the bucolic interior is just as charming, with ancient walled villages, secluded valleys and lush, fertile plains.
