Andrea's Austrian adventure

Regular Inntraveller, Andrea Mead, shares her experience of walking Austria's Salzkammergut, a region of mountains and lakes. They pass through Hallstatt, Gosau, and St Agatha, where fresh Alpine air, delightful villages, the sound of cowbells in the distance, and panoramic views across to snow-capped glaciers made up for some stormy weather on arrival.

How our walking holidays in Austria are graded

For easy or moderate walking, Austria is a great choice, despite its mountains. At the lowest end of the scale is our laid-back holiday in the Stubai Valley south-west of Innsbruck, and we have another relatively gentle walking holiday in Austria’s lake district, Salzkammergut. For moderate walking, head to the Tyrol or Wachau Valley. We grade our walking holidays as follows:
  • Gentle yet panoramic trails, ranging between 5-10km and often taking place on very well-waymarked paths, are the essence of our walking holidays in Mösern and the Stubai Valley. Each holiday is based at one high-quality hotel for the week, so you decide when to walk, when to sightsee, and when simply to sit back and relax.
  • Look forward to glorious lake and mountain scenery on our grade 1-2 Salzkammergut walking holiday. There's a choice of walks most days, giving you the option of a longer or shorter route, and even though the paths themselves are relatively easy – think lakeside and meadow trails of approximately 10km apiece – cable cars allow you to access the high mountains for unforgettable views.
  • What can you expect if you choose a grade 2 walking holiday in Austria? On the Wachau World Heritage Trail, it's all about panoramic paths through lofty vineyards and beside the Danube (with ancient castle ruins featuring regularly). In the Leutasch Valley, meanwhile, you have the chance to strike out into the high mountains on flexible routes along well-waymarked paths. Route distances vary, but 15km is average.
  • For ultimate flexibility, choose our walking holiday by Lake Achensee. As well as enjoying superb lakeside, valley, and mountain trails (of varying lengths and difficulties), you can explore by boat, cable car, and cog railway, and visit Innsbruck for the day.
