Nowadays, many villages, particularly in the Alps, boast large networks of specially prepared winter walking paths and/or designated snowshoeing trails. Neither activity requires any special skill or clothing; the only ‘difficulty’ is choosing which trail to explore!

So extensive are the winter walking and snowshoeing possibilities in Switzerland, Italy and Austria, that numerous villages in our selection would be perfect for a holiday devoted to either activity. Choose Guarda or Sils for the fairy-tale surroundings, or Moso for views of the Dolomites. Weidach and Kandersteg are also great choices.
