Holiday information

A family walking holiday in Portugal

There are two very different sides to unspoiled western Algarve, both equally rewarding to discover as a family. On the coast, undulating paths lead along the top of weathered, honey-coloured cliffs punctuated by sleepy, whitewashed fishing villages and crumbling fortresses such as that at Sagres. Beneath the cliffs lie secluded, sandy bays that stretch westwards towards dramatic Cape St Vincent, the very edge of Europe, where the Romans believed that the sun sank into the Atlantic every evening.
Inland is a different scene entirely, even lesser-known than the western coast. Here, groves of orange and almond trees give way to the rugged, cork-oak clad hills of the Monchique Sierra whose paths reward you with wide-reaching views.
Your base from which to discover all this (and more!) is the Algarve Quinta, set in peaceful countryside 5 kilometres inland from historic Lagos with its golden beaches. The farmhouse has been carefully converted into comfortable apartments, and is home to Jill and Julio Pires, your wonderful Anglo-Portuguese hosts. Consistently praised for their exceptional hospitality, they welcome families warmly and are happy to share their wealth of local knowledge with you to help your family get the most out of your stay.

Fun-filled days

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. For most of the year you can start on the day of your choice. There’s no fixed itinerary, so take your pick of our suggested walking routes and other activities as the mood takes you.
  • The average maximum daytime temperatures and monthly rainfall relate to the nearest weather station and are intended as a guide only.

The area enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year. February brings almond blossom; late March and April are colourful months with lots of flowers and broom; while December sees ripe oranges hanging from the trees.

  • An introduction
One of the best ways to explore this secret corner’s unspoiled landscapes is on foot. We offer a wide range of gentle-to-moderate walks (grade 1-2 and 2) both along the coast and inland, all of which are less than an hour’s drive from the Quinta, giving you easy access in your hire car.

    Other activities:
    • horse riding (local)
    • water sports (local)
    • fishing (15 mins away)
    • boat trips and dolphin watching (15 mins away)
    • surfing (1 hour away)
    • golf and tennis (local)
  • Choice of routes: 8km to 13km

    Luz to Salema: 11km, 4hrs
Of our four coastal walks, the most rewarding starts at the delightful resort of Luz, which is well worth a visit. From here, you head west along an undulating coastal path over the cliff-tops and around the limestone headlands which are coated with flowers in spring. You pass through the pretty fishing village of Burgau, then cross the beautiful sands of the Praia da Almadena to reach the broad estuary of the Boca do Rio, home to many species of bird, and finally Salema, from where you can catch an inexpensive bus back to Luz.

    Lagos to Luz: 12km, 4hrs
This is another linear route along the coast (again, you return to your car by bus – pay locally), starting at the handsome port of Lagos and following cliff-top paths westwards above secluded coves to reach Luz.

    Figueira circuit: 13km, 4.5hrs
This circular route begins inland at Figueira and leads to the beach of Praia do Zavial.

    Benagil to Albandeira: 8km, 3hrs
This walk begins in a tiny fishing village and follows a lovely stretch of coastline to remote beaches. There are many wildflowers along the dramatic, buff-coloured cliffs. Keep an eye out for the fishermen perched precariously on the tiny outcrops hanging high above the sea.
  • Choice of routes: 5km or 8km

    Amoreira circuit: 8km, 3hrs
Enjoy a leisurely circuit that first winds inland through pleasant flower-filled meadows and shady eucalyptus woodland before descending to the beach at Carreagem. Relax and enjoy a swim before following the coastal path back to your car.

    Bordeira beach: 5km, 2hrs
Bordeira beach offers three kilometres of uninterrupted golden sand. Have lunch here perhaps, and enjoy a walk along the cliffs.
  • Choice of routes: 7km or 10km

    Picota Peak: 10km, 4hrs
This walk takes in the rounded summit of Picota, winding through cork woods and a lush valley before ascending through eucalyptus groves and open land to reach the rocky ridge which leads to the peak. From the summit you are rewarded with startling views that extend all the way to the coast in clear weather.

    Monchique Valley: 7km, 2.5hrs
This is an easier walk that explores the beautiful valley which stretches beneath the white-washed village of Monchique.
  • For strolls, swimming, surfing & more
So beautiful is the secret western coastline of the Algarve that you could quite easily spend every day at the beach – the nearest is just 5 kilometres away, and there are plenty of others beyond that. Meia Praia is a vast expanse of sand in one of the biggest bays in Europe, near the historic old town of Lagos. Protected from rough seas, this long beach of soft, white sand is perfect for families. Enjoy walks along the pristine sands or a swim in the clear blue waters before lunch at one of the many snack bars and restaurants. Activities on offer on the beach include surfing, kite flying, paragliding, sailing, volleyball and tennis.
  • Take a boat trip
For a truly exhilarating experience, join a dolphin sea safari to get close to these incredible animals in their natural environment. Boat trips depart each day from Marina de Portimao and Marina de Lagos using some of the biggest and most powerful 'ribs' (big rigid rubber motorised dinghies) in Europe.
  • Fortresses, the edge of Europe & more
You can combine either of the walks in the Monchique Sierra with a visit to Caldas de Monchique, a spa town set in a wooded ravine. What was once a casino that catered for the holidaying Spanish bourgeoisie in the 19th century is now an excellent handicrafts centre.

On the coast, it is worth visiting Sagres, complete with a fortress (and wind compass) built by Henry the Navigator. Further west, Cape São Vicente is right on the western edge of Europe. The Romans believed that the sun sank into the sea here each night, and it is certainly a very dramatic spot.
