This Holiday in a nutshell
  • enchanting train journey through the Inn and Danube Valleys
  • discover Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna, with cultural notes provided
  • three intimate, friendly and welcoming hotels
  • atmospheric Christmas markets in December

Handsome monuments, colourful histories, and streets that take you back in time, combine to give Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna a special allure, particularly in winter. These are, arguably, Austria’s three greatest cities, with much to intrigue and enthral, and our choice of intimate, high-quality hotels only adds to the appeal of this wonderful holiday. With the streets much quieter, you can enjoy these three very different cities in all their splendour, the snow on the rooftops, the Christmas markets in December and the Gemütlichkeit  of the warm and inviting coffee houses adding to the enchantment.

What I like most about this journey is that the three cities you visit are all very different in character. The crisp air, the quieter streets, and the snowy mountains surrounding Innsbruck and Salzburg make for a magical atmosphere.

Alison Temple, Inntravel

You journey between the cities by rail from west to east so that you start with the smallest and finish in the culturally absorbing capital. With a full day in each to explore (two in the case of Vienna), you can gain a feel for their very different characters. Surrounded by towering peaks which provide a dramatic backdrop to the historic buildings, in Innsbruck there is no escaping the fact that you are in the heart of the Alps. If Innsbruck is dominated by mountains, Salzburg, meanwhile, is dominated by music – the rich culture of this vibrant, cosmopolitan city is inextricably linked with that of its most famous son, Mozart. Last, but by no means least, is graceful Vienna, where an abundance of palaces hark back to the city’s imperial past.
