Idyllic Istria

Along wine roads to a colourful coast
Chosen for their locations, the three places at which you stay are different in character, all charming in their own way.

Hotel Cittar (3*), Novigrad

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Hotel Cittar
This family-run hotel is situated in Novigrad’s historic quarter, close to the marina and beach, as well as to the medieval town walls. There is an outdoor terrace and a glass-covered courtyard, both of which make pleasant places to relax with a drink before heading out for dinner. The air-conditioned bedrooms are equipped with a safe, hairdryer, minibar and satellite television.

Al Merlo Olivo (guesthouse), Krasica

Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

Al Merlo Olivo
Surrounded by the olive trees which give it its name, Al Merlo Olivo has been converted from a traditional stone house and its five bedrooms all have exposed stone walls, as well as the more modern amenities of air-conditioning and satellite television. Host Antonela is an excellent chef and incorporates home-grown vegetables into the authentic Istrian specialities which she serves each evening.

La Grisa (4*), Bale

Meal arrangements: breakfast, plus dinner on first night

La Grisa
This boutique hotel is an oasis of tranquillity, as reflected in the simple elegance of the stylish bedrooms (complete with air-conditioning, a hairdryer, satellite television and wifi). As well as a lounge, bar and restaurant, the hotel has an attractive courtyard and a wellness area with a small indoor pool and facilities for massages and other treatments (pay locally).

Starting point: Hotel Cittar, Novigrad
Day 1: Hotel Cittar, Novigrad
Days 2-3: Al Merlo Olivo, Krasica
Days 4-6: Hotel La Grisa, Bale
Extra nights
Any (or all!) bases make a good choice for an extra night. Choose Novigrad for more time by the coast (boat trips run during the main summer season) or Krasica to spend more time discovering the less-explored hinterland. Alternatively, in Bale you can enjoy the best of both worlds – it’s within easy reach of the coast yet remains tranquil and unspoiled.
