This Holiday in a nutshell
  • superb Nordic winter experience
  • historic hotel with far-reaching views
  • acclaimed cuisine
  • walk through a frozen canyon

Two features strike visitors to Hindsæter in the mountains of central Norway: the serenity of its surroundings and the views. And what views they are, stretching uninterrupted across the valley towards the high peaks of the Jotunheimen National Park, which you can see outlined on the horizon. We couldn’t think of a better backdrop for a holiday that introduces you to the joys of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter walking.

The hotel delivered exactly what it said it would. Karola and André were delightful hosts, always helpful and full of information about the locality. The care taken and presentation of their dinners was exceptionally good. We have such good memories of our holiday in Hindsæter and enjoyed taking part in all the activities, skiing, snowshoeing, ice canyoning and sledging despite being in our 70s.

Farmer Otto Østrem certainly demonstrated great foresight when he chose to build his hotel here in the late 19th century. Some things have changed since the arrival of his first guest in 1898 (early visitors didn’t benefit from creature comforts such as a timber-built wellness area with a sauna, whirlpool and infrared cabin to release muscular tension), but others haven’t – the settlement still only comprises the hotel and a handful of summer farms, making it feel refreshingly removed from the everyday world.
