Holiday information

Picture-book Ramsau

Below the imposing Dachstein mountain range, a cluster of small villages and hamlets are scattered across a sunny, south-facing plateau above the River Enns. This area has been inhabited for at least a thousand years, with early inhabitants making their living from grazing cows and sheep on the summer pastures and selling cheese and wool products. Today, this scenic corner of Austria is best known for its myriad walking possibilities, with spectacular routes revealing mirror-like lakes, pretty villages and dramatic glaciers.
But the scenery and the walking are not the only reasons for coming to Ramsau: the Hotel Matschner is fantastic too. We have worked with the English-speaking Knaus family for many years, which means that, as an Inntravel guest, you can be sure of a particularly warm welcome and very attentive service. This is complemented by refined, highly praised Austrian cuisine and excellent facilities that include an adjoining leisure complex with spa facilities.

Itinerary

  • Gosau to Ramsau: 1hr by taxi
Today you will be collected from your hotel and taken by taxi to Ramsau – a journey of just over an hour. At the hotel, you will be given a Summercard, which entitles you to a whole host of benefits, including guided glacier and nature walks, and introductory sessions in Nordic walking.

If you have time, you may like to enjoy an introductory amble this afternoon (we recommend the Panoramaweg option – see Days 8-9 below).
  • Choice of walks from Ramsau: 8km-21km
We offer a choice of delightful routes for your next two days, including the classic trail from beneath the Dachstein Massif back down to the village. In addition, your hosts organise several guided walks each week, which are free except for any transport costs. We also recommend a visit by cable car to the Dachstein Glacier – your visitors’ card entitles you to a free return trip – where you may choose to simply take in the stupendous views on a ‘Sky Walk’ or continue across the snow to see the glacier up close.

    Panoramaweg: 8km, 2hrs
A perfect introduction to the area or a good option for a wet-weather day, this low-level, circular walk leads from the village across fields, meadows and woods to the east of Ramsau offering good views over the surrounding peaks.

    Rittisberg Circuit: 21km, 7hrs
Starting from the hotel, this walk affords broad views of the Enns Valley and the Dachstein Mountains as you cross undulating, south-facing pastures dotted with traditional wooden cabins.

    Beneath the Dachstein: 12.5km, 4.5hrs
Take the bus to Bachalm, where you can feed the marmots before striking out along a panoramic path beneath the south wall of the Dachstein, whose pale rock face rises steeply above the larch forests and pastures. Having walked the length of the 4-kilometre-wide wall, you return to Ramsau on a forest track and across meadows.

Accommodation

Please note: most beds in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

Important: the adjoining lesiure complex (bar the fitness zone – pay locally) is currently closed for renovations and will not re-open until December 2019. During this time, guests can travel by public bus to Schladming to use the swimming pool there. Buses depart regularly (every 20 minutes) and are free of charge with the included guest card.
