Holiday information

A walking holiday along the Camino Inglés

Retrace the footsteps of centuries of English and Irish pilgrims as you follow the Camino Inglés from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela, on a self-guided walking holiday with luggage transfers included.

Among the many routes to Santiago, the Camino Inglés carves its own path. Not only is it one of the few Caminos to balance coast and countryside – echoing the journey made by medieval pilgrims from Northern Europe who arrived in Galicia by sea – but it is a lesser-known route, allowing for a more tranquil experience. At just under 120 kilometres from Ferrol to Santiago, it’s also relatively short – enough to qualify you for the Compostela (the official pilgrim certificate), but not more than can comfortably be managed in a week’s walking.

Beautiful views are a standout highlight, from the golden sands, marshlands and estuaries of the coast to the undulating hills, rivers, and forests of Galicia’s interior. The landscapes often feel secluded – locals working the fields are a more common sight than large groups of fellow pilgrims – but the route still brims with heritage. Whether exploring Ferrol’s naval past, the historic towns of Pontedeume and Betanzos, or the incredible riches of Santiago, there is much to discover – and this holiday has been designed to give you time to do so. Your comfortable accommodation often places you in the town centre, perfectly positioned to sightsee, and you have a free day in Santiago, enabling you to enjoy this unique city to the full.

Itinerary

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.

To be able to offer the best of the region’s accommodation, your holiday features occasional transfers between the Camino route and your hotel for the night. Where these are mentioned in the itinerary below, they are pre-arranged by Inntravel and included in the holiday price.

  • Night 1: at Hotel Almirante or, if you choose to upgrade, Parador de Ferrol
Ferrol is a city with a rich maritime past – during the 18th century it was home to Europe’s largest weapons arsenal, and, as the birthplace of General Franco, it was given a significant role in the Spanish Civil War. Several of Ferrol’s major shipyards are still in use today and there is an interesting Naval Museum, attractive waterfront, and charming Old Town to visit.

As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Ferrol to Pontedeume: 17km, 6.5hrs; ascent/descent 360m
Start the day with a transfer through Ferrol’s remaining shipyards to Neda – an ancient town surrounded by beautiful countryside. Here you join the Camino Inglés and follow the estuary south to climb out of town, enjoying superb views back over Ferrol, Neda, and neighbouring Narón. You then descend through rural scenery to the sweeping sands of pine-backed La Madalena Beach, perhaps pausing for a swim before crossing the River Eume via an arched, 14th-century bridge. Once in Pontedeume, make your way to the historic centre and your accommodation for the night, Hotel Albatros.
    Ferrol
  • Pontedeume to Betanzos: 20km, 7.5hrs; ascent/descent 480m
Today’s walk is a perfect blend of sea views, medieval paths, and delightful towns. It begins with a climb out of Pontedeume – which rewards with spectacular Atlantic panoramas – and continues uphill across historic stone bridges to the seaside town of Miño. From here, you walk beside the coast, on a path that affords highlight views of the Betanzos estuary and surrounding marshlands. Country lanes deliver you to your final destination, Betanzos – not only one of Galicia’s architectural gems with its gothic churches and noble houses, but home to a renowned tortilla that offers a simpler alternative to the famous Spanish Omelette. You stay centrally, at Hotel Garelos.

  • Betanzos to Beche: 20km, 7.5hrs; ascent 510m/descent 250m
Leaving the coast behind, you enter Galicia’s unspoiled interior – traversing undulating hills, rivers, and forests on your journey south. As you walk, you encounter historic stone bridges and tiny wayside churches, before finally making a scenic ascent to the Beche reservoir. Located in the heart of Galicia’s second largest biosphere reserve – the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo – this reservoir provides an idyllic end point for today’s route, with your pre-arranged taxi transferring you from here to Casa Rural Costa da Egoa.
    Betanzos
  • Beche to Outeiro: 22km, 8hrs; ascent 270m/descent 250m
Today you experience peaceful, rural Galicia at its best. After a short transfer back to the Beche reservoir, you set out for Hospital de Bruma – where a medieval infirmary once stood and where you can now find a modern pilgrim hostel. Continue on ancient paths to the village of A Rúa and its Romanesque-style church, on whose exterior you can admire a striking statue of the child martyr, Saint Pelayo. It’s just over two kilometres from here to your accommodation for the night, Casa Rural Antón Veiras, located outside the hamlet of Outeiro.

  • Outeiro to O Pedrouzo: 15km, 5hrs; ascent 110m/descent 200m
Following an initial climb to the village of A Calle – a perfect place to pause for a morning coffee – you descend along forest tracks and across remote, rural terrain until you reach Sigüeiro. For those walking the Camino Inglés, this riverside town is traditionally the last stop before Santiago, however, you are collected from here by taxi to enjoy the boutique comforts of nearby Hotel Amiuka. This innovative accommodation sits on the edges of O Pedrouzo – a town that features on more than one Camino route, and where the streets throng with expectant pilgrims.

  • O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela: 16km, 6hrs; ascent 250m/descent 210m
As O Pedrouzo is not part of the Camino Inglés, you return by taxi to Sigüeiro to complete the final stretch of your chosen pilgrimage. Although today’s route is not the most scenic of the holiday, there are some beautiful sections along forested paths, and your ultimate destination – Santiago de Compostela and its iconic Obradoiro Square – are never far from your thoughts. The anticipation only increases as you reach the city’s urban outskirts, which eventually give way to the Old Town and magnificent cathedral, where you can celebrate the completion of your journey with fellow pilgrims. You have two nights here – spent either at Hotel Virxe da Cerca or Hotel Compostela. Alternatively, why not upgrade to the 5-star Parador de Santiago de Compostela to finish in real style?
