Holiday information

Porto

Downriver of what have become some of Europe’s most famous vineyards, and just a few kilometres in the opposite direction from the Atlantic, Porto is synonymous with the port-wine trade. Indeed, the destiny of Portugal’s second-largest city was sealed when grapes were first grown in the Douro Valley, and Porto has been shaped by this highly prized export ever since.
Clinging to the steep north bank of the Douro is the old town, the UNESCO-recognised Ribeira, whose ornate churches and palaces are evidence of the city’s prosperity and whose jumbled streets seemingly all lead down to the quayside. Here, five bridges, including one by Gustave Eiffel and a spectacular two-tiered construction, link to Vila Nova de Gaia, where giant signs emblazon the rooftops of port lodges such as Sandeman, Graham’s and Cockburn, enticing visitors to come and sample the contents of their treasured barrels.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for self-guided walking tours included
The Old Town’s two main landmarks are the crenellated cathedral (the Sé) and the 75-metre-high Clérigos Tower, both of which serve as a wonderful vantage point from which to marvel at the warren of streets which contain an eclectic mix of Baroque, Neo-classical, Neo-Palladian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture. Also worth visiting, not for their views but for their ornate interiors, are the Stock Exchange (Bolsa) and the church of São Francisco.

Our self-guided city walking trails give you a good insight into the city, introducing you to sites and characters connected to the Siege of Porto in 1832 as they lead you through the ancient streets, and taking you via São Bento railway station to admire the 20,000 hand-painted tiles which depict historical scenes and pastoral landscapes.
  • Take a tour of a port lodge
Leave time for simply soaking up the charm of the Ribeira – the riverbank itself is lined with bars and restaurants which invite you to do just that – and also for indulging in the city’s famous export in the Vila Nova de Gaia district on the other side of the river.

Many of the lodges open their doors to visitors, but we particularly recommend a tour of Graham’s Wine Lodge which, if you pre-book through Inntravel (see Pricing section for prices), includes an exclusive personalised tasting in the lodge’s wood-panelled tasting room at your own table with a selection of three special ports.
  • Foz
There’s plenty to see and do in Porto, but, if you want to get out of the city or if the weather is good, then do as the locals do and take the rumbling, nostalgic tram westwards to the coastal town of Foz for some relaxation by the sea.
