August's Photo of the Month Lauren Thackray Puente | Posted: 01 September 2017

Entitled The Square in the round, this amazing shot by Norman Price was captured sitting on the Senate Square steps in Helsinki. He says:

“It was just nice to sit on the Senate Square steps and listen to the band. And then I noticed the reflection in the French horn."

August's judge was Gavin Burnett, the overall winner of our Moments Photographic Competition in 2015.

Gavin Burnett is a Photographer and Designer based in Manchester UK. He developed the bug for travel from a young age after spending a month in communist Russia at the age of 13. Since then Gavin has been to more than 50 countries and 7 continents.

Gavin's work can be seen on his website www.gavinburnett.com.

Here, he tells us why he selected Normans' shot as the winner, plus the three runners-up who will also go forward into the 'grand final' at the end of the year.

Winner – "The square in the round' by Norman Price
"A really clever image with second layer where the viewer gets a sense of place from the fisheye reflection in the horn. A great slow moment as I can imagine people stopping in their tracks to listen in."

First Runner up – "Lofoten Sunset" by Andrew Locking
"The setting sun glancing off the rorbu (fishermen's huts) on the Lofoten Islands at the end of July - at this time of year it's a slow sunset with plenty of time to wait for the right moment."

Gavin says: "A lovely dramatic landscape image shot a the perfect time of day with the sun catching the red houses in Lofoten. Great composition with a ‘take me there’ quality"

Second Runner up – "Fishy business" by David Pechey
"The souk's fish stall owner was proud of his grand display but was blissfully unaware of the cat's envious intentions."

Gavin says: " Love this image for making me smile and the story it portrays. I imagine there is a daily battle going on between these two characters in the souk. Great image and well captured."

Third Runner up – "Suprise company" by Jacob Goldberg
"We were taking a break near the top of our climb when first a sheep dog, then a gazillion goats and a shepherd appeared and surrounded us. So that's where all that yummy cheese came from."

Gavin says: "Love the composition on this, it has a nice painterly feel to the scene. It’s nicely timed with the shepherd looking at camera connecting with the viewer."
