Senja - An Arctic Island

A fusion of mountain, moorland & sea
Your accommodation in this remote corner of Europe is both varied and comfortable, as well as being in tune with your natural surroundings. After beginning at a hotel of 4-star standard, your last two bases are villages rather than hotels – fishing communities that enable visitors to stay in various thoughtfully converted buildings and former homes. The harbourside cabin suites at Hamn make a particularly fine place to finish.

Arctic Hotel, Sommarøy

Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

Arctic Hotel
The Arctic Hotel on the small archipelago of Sommarøy provides modern style and 4-star-standard comfort in a spectacular waterside location. The large restaurant, with its commendably short menu, has access to the deck; on fine mornings and evenings you can eat outside. The hotel has a small gym, as well as a sauna with views and outside access for refreshing open-air showers or a dip in the sea. There is also a hot tub (book and pay locally). The comfortable rooms all come with a shower, plus a balcony or terrace, providing views over the water and/or village.

Mefjord Brygge, Mefjordvær

Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

Mefjord Brygge
Comprising a collection of harbourside buildings, including a converted fish warehouse and some former village homes, Mefjord Brygge has simple rooms and a characterful bar and restaurant offering an authentic feel combined with modern comforts. Norwegian home cooking is served from a sunny, first-floor deck, with freshly caught fish a speciality, and tasty reindeer dishes.

Hamn-i-Senja, Senja

Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

This beautiful hamlet suits its spectacular location, nestling on a small spit of land off the coast of Senja. There was once a bustling fishing community here dating back to the 1880s, though today the refurbished buildings house elegant accommodation, including public lounges and an excellent restaurant, Storbrygga Spiseri, which serves traditional Norwegian dishes often featuring seasonal seafood. We include light-filled suites overlooking the harbour, each with a seating area, fully-equipped kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, panoramic windows and private deck. With a sauna, small gym and outdoor hot-tub in a former fishing boat for your use, too, Hamn really is a wonderful place to relax.
