Tromsø

225 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is a remarkable – and friendly – city that is home to the world’s most northerly university and brewery. Many polar expeditions started here, hence why it’s frequently referred to as the ‘gateway to the Arctic’.
The city sits on an island, at a confluence of fjords, with a historic centre of traditional, brightly painted wooden buildings. At this latitude, the Midnight Sun is visible from late May to late July, a particularly special time to visit.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
    Despite its modest size, Tromsø boasts not one, but two cathedrals: the Domkirke, with its tall spire, and the 20th-century Arctic Cathedral, whose iconic structure resembles an iceberg and dominates the skyline. Behind the latter is a cable car to the summit of Mount Storsteinen, from where you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city.

    The self-guided walking tour for which we provide notes helps you to get to know Tromsø, leading you past the Polar Museum which recounts the experiences (and many hardships) of early explorers; Skansen, the former customs house and the oldest building in Tromsø; the Museum of Modern Art; Polaria, a museum-cum-aquarium which offers a good introduction to northern Norway; and the workshop of the world’s most northerly glass-blower.
