This Holiday in a nutshell
  • fascinating city with a rich past
  • notes for a self-guided walking tour included
  • centrally located hotels of character
  • enjoy as an add-on to another Inntravel holiday on Corfu

The main town of Corfu is one of the most interesting cities in Greece due to the heavy influence of the Venetians who for centuries controlled the island. Like the other Ionian islands, Corfu was never occupied by the Turks, which gives it a character very different from the rest of Greece. However, the island has been influenced by other occupying nations, including the British, Italians, Normans, French, Greeks and Romans, whose ancient buildings are still in evidence at several sites and the excellent archaeological museum.
The Platia, laid out to resemble the Rue de Rivoli by French architects, was the hub of the island. Here you would sit at little tables under the arches or beneath the shimmering trees, drinking quietly... and, sooner or later, you would see everyone on the island.
Gerald Durrell
The wide open Spianada Square – the Platia – which overlooks the old Venetian forts and the sea makes a wonderful place to stroll and get into the rhythms of this fascinating island capital. Take time out to sit at one of the many terrace cafes beneath the arches of the famous Liston building or wander round one of the many museums to gain an insight into the island's rich and varied past.
