All hotels (Solar do Castelo, Sapientia and Pestana Vintage) were excellent. Plenty of interesting places in all three cities - we added extra nights in Porto to fit them all in. In Lisbon, be aware that not all westbound trains from Cais de Sodre stop at Belem - we had to backtrack! The interiors of many of the churches are stunning. Having been to Lisbon before we decided to walk through Alfama to the Museu do Azulejo (the national Tile Museum, not as dull as it sounds!) which also houses the beautiful church of the Madre de Deus Convent. In Lisbon the food at the Cantinho do Aziz was almost unbearably salty but the Chapito a Mesa was excellent and very friendly. We can also recommend the Sapientia and Sete restaurants in Coimbra and the Fish Fixe, Cantinho do Avillez and Raiz restaurants in Porto.
We enjoyed getting back to the Hotel Solar de Castelo and being able to sit in a lovely, comfortable space, make a cup of tea and read the books and guides provided. The view from the roof terrace at the Hotel Sapienta is marvellous and we liked the position of the Hotel Pestana, right on the Douro. All three hotels were well chosen for their excellent locations from which to venture out! Although we would have liked to spend longer in each place, this enabled us to see and experience a lot in the time we were there. We'd recommend eating in the Time Out building in Lisbon and Jimao and Ribera Square opposite the entrance to the Hotel Pestana in Porto.
This was a great trip and very well organised. The hotels were excellent, particularly the Solar do Castelo in Lisbon which had an exceptionally welcoming feel. We used the walking tours extensively, but all three destinations involve a lot of walking up steep hills and steps, often on cobbled streets - be warned!

The Britannia Hotel in Lisbon, which is an alternative choice on your website, was excellent in every respect, and we very much appreciated the complimentary extras - afternoon tea, a decanter of port in the room, and free port at the bar each evening. It would be worth your clients knowing that the Sapientia Boutique hotel in Coimbra has a lovely garden and a very good restaurant which is very welcome if you prefer not to walk up and down the steep hill in the evening. As far as dining is concerned, we had very good meals at the tapas restaurant recommeded in Lisbon, and Sette in Coimbra. In Porto we could recommend Postigo do Carvao in Ryan da Fonte Taurina, just behind the Hotel Pestana.
We started with On the Waterfront and enjoyed a wonderfully rich experience exploring the three cities. Each city was quite different, hotels all good quality and well located, and were able to provide us with much helpful advice and assistance. The Inntravel walking and guidance notes were, as always, excellent. The only change I would consider is possibly adding a further night in Lisbon as we only really scratched the surface in this fascinating city.
We followed this with Valley of Gold (4 nights). The walking was scenic and varied, although we hardly met anyone else. The route guidance provided was clear and easy to follow - we didn't require the additional maps provided. Accommodation was spacious, comfortable, and good quality. Vilarinho de Sao Romano House was like staying in a country house we were all made to feel so welcome - all guests dined together enjoying the wonderful "home cooked" food. We moved on to the more modern Quinta de la Rosa at Pinhao - again very comfortable accommodation, views over the river Douro and first class dining.
A very busy holiday with so much to do and see but we returned home refreshed and relaxed - well done Inntravel.
We particularly liked Lisbon. Fortunately we booked an extra day, as there is so much to see. The Inntravel recommendations and those from the hotels were helpful, but apart from Claras near the Castle in Lisbon, none of these were outstanding. Sete in Coimbra was dissapointing.
Although Coimbra is worth visiting, the University mostly consists of 1950's style buildings. The Museum of Curiosites was extraordinary.
Porto was very crowded when we arrived, but we enjoyed it overall. We joined a very good 'free tour'. The Lello library was so crowded that we did not go in.
We had some excellent meals, mostly places we assessed on passing. On the last night we ate at MURO, on the waterfront a little downstream. This was good.
Overall a very enjoyable trip, although the tours suggested were somewhat optimistic.
While we were in Portugal there was a strike of Public sector workers which affected some trains and the public monuments around Sintra. It would have been helpful to have been warned of this (we did get a text in relation to the journey from Coimbra to Porto, which was helpful)
INNTRAVEL NOTE: These customers did our walking holiday 'Palaces and Pathways of Sintra' followed by our journey 'On the Waterfront'.
I am not sure this holiday is correctly titled as only at the Pestana in Porto were we truly on the waterfront. The other two hotes were at the top of extremely high hills with water in the far distance. This didn't matter at all.
One thing not to miss is a visit to the Lisbon Castelo as soon as it opens if you can as it gets crowded. Magnificent views. Take binocs if you can. Don't bother with the Camera Obscura but do visit the archaeological site and get the special little tour there.
You can walk up to Hotel Sapienta from the Coimbra A station with backpacks as we did. Tough but worth it as there were no taxis. The hotel rewarded us with food and drink before check-in. The rail ticket from Lisbon to Coimbra B includes the short transfer to 'Coimbra A if you smile nicely in the ticket office.
Avoid the hotel taxis where possible as they charge a fortune. Get the regular metred ones.
Do walk across the steel bridge in Porto at both levels and google it too. Go up to the monastery on the Gaia side for even better views.
We loved Lisbon (the old part) the best, followed closely by Coimbra. Porto is more commercial. In Coimbra the university tour is great and well worth the money. The famous library with its resident bats (ask the guide for more details) is unforgettable. Botanic gardens in October not very exciting but at least it's green.
The Joanina Library in Coimbra is a must as is the Chamber of Curiosities!! Crazy but such fun. The new Mercado in Bolha, Porto is excellent, lots of tasting opportunities, we particularly like the Hugo Silva canned fish with vinho verde. And of course port tasting - the family house of Vasques de Carvalho was exceptional.
We really enjoyed the holiday. The hotels and their locations were very good, particularly in Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon we were next door to the castle and very much enjoyed the historical area and local bars and restaurants. We would certainly recommend Clara's which was very close to the hotel. In Porto we immediately enjoyed the location of the hotel, alive with restaurants and bars (we did do other things). The walk across the Dom Luis Bridge provided great views down and either side of the river. We visited a port house on the opposite side to our hotel and the walk along that side showed us a very different and laid back vibe. Not wishing to leave out Coimbra - we had to search harder but the area was full of interesting sites to visit. Including of course the university and its various halls. We strolled through the Botanical Gardens, again very impressive. Its just a shame we weren't there earlier in the year and that the weather wasn't kinder to us. It was a bit of a whistlestop tour but much enjoyed.
Portugal - On the Waterfront - Definitely needed additional days in Porto and Lisbon, lots to see and do. Coimbra was a lovely relaxed place to stay. A visit to the University and Library were fascinating. Restaurant at Sapientia Hotel in Coimbra, was fantastic. Plenty of good restaurants in all three places. We thought a Fado show might be a bit "touristy", but we went to a restaurant meal, with Fado, at Restaurante RC, on Rua do Infante D. Henrique. It was a very good meal and the Fado was incredible, so moving and engaging. A great experience. It seemed to have quite a few local diners, which is always a good sign.
This was our first experience with Inntravel. We were a group of five people. All of us agreed that the trip could not have been better. Our accommodations far exceeded our expectations. The taxi service was excellent. Our first trip with the taxi was from Lisbon to Sesimbra. The taxi was not there at the appointed time. However they called the hotel promptly to let us know they were delayed by a traffic accident and they sent another taxi to transport us. The train was also a pleasant surprise as were our seats which were perfect. I could see the thoughtfulness you put into every detail. We loved the hikes, especially the one from Azeitao to Palmela. We were a bit disappointed in our accommodations there. We were not in the Pousada and the Casa de Italia was a unique inn. My husband and I chose the bedroom on the entry level as we would have been unable to get our luggage up the spiral stairs. The room we chose was dark and we all found the rooms interesting but not functional. The pool there was delightful, however, and the young lady at the desk was extremely helpful, assuring us that we could take the bus to Setubal easily as there were no cabs available. We used many of your restaurant suggestions as we traveled and they were all great. We ate at Casa Mateus twice we had such a wonderful time. The hiking directions were perfect. We were a little uneasy about that aspect but we only missed the Number 10 gate and it didn't matter because we came out at the right place to have our picnic. We feel we would have liked easier to read and more detailed maps but we ended up asking for local maps in the small towns. We did use the city walk directions to get started in the cities and to try not to miss anything. But we ended up veering off on our own when we saw something of interest. All in all, we all felt it was the trip of a lifetime and that we saw parts of Portugal that most people don't see. I am totally looking forward to our next trip with Inntravel. I'll also add that the hotel in Porto was wonderful about making an appointment with someone who came to the hotel to give us our Covid tests before returning to the US. They made it very easy for us. Thank you all so much for your attention to detail and for making this such a wonderful trip for us all.
INNTRAVEL NOTE: These customers combined a stay in Lisbon, the From Cape to Castle walking itinerary, and the On the Waterfront rail journey.
