A walking holiday on Gran Canaria

Experience rewarding walking as you traverse Gran Canaria’s epic landscapes from the southeast to the northwest. Your routes lead you through rugged aloe vera-lined barrancos (deep, narrow valleys), into the arid central mountains towards the lush Agaete Valley. By night, relax in a delightful mix of accommodation, each with its own story to tell.
It may measure only 50 kilometres in diameter, but Gran Canaria possesses scenery on a grand scale. There are peaks that rise to almost 2,000 metres; crags and towering rock formations that wouldn’t look out of place in Arizona; wide open spaces; black volcanic cones offset by the vibrant green of Canarian pines; and even a huge caldera reminiscent of the Grand Canyon.

Begin in Agüimes, a Canarian town that’s closely guarded its heritage – wandering its cobbled streets leads you past traditional stone buildings and statues that symbolise chapters of its heritage. From here, walking trails zig zag up and down through valleys speckled with prickly pears as you progress northwards to the sea through three very distinct landscapes: the volcanic, mountainous interior; the quiet north-west coast; and the green, pastoral landscapes that lie in between. Impressive views greet you at every turn – not just of Gran Canaria’s own towering peaks, but also the soaring cone of El Teide on Tenerife, some 70 miles away – providing you with a real sense of achievement.



Itinerary

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights. It's up to you whether you follow our suggested routes for non-itinerant days or simply relax at your hotel.
  • The average maximum daytime temperatures and monthly rainfall relate to the nearest weather station and are intended as a guide only.

    Winters are generally mild, although it is cooler in the high mountains and more humid in the north of the island. Gran Canaria has been known to have the odd day of snow in winter, but only above 1400m.

  • Arrival in Agüimes
    Night 1: at Casa de los Camellos (the first of two nights here).
    As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Choice of routes from Agüimes: 9.5km to 16.5km
    We offer a choice of two routes from Agüimes – a short and a longer route. For both, you firstly take a bus to Temisas, one of the island’s emblematic villages.

    Barranco de las Vacas: 9.5km, 3hrs; ascent 250m/descent 690m
    This route heads more directly back to Agüimes, traversing rugged landscape and following the contours of the hills to be able to look back over Temisas. Criss cross down and up the valley and into Barranco de las Vacas, an otherworldly canyon of smooth stone sculptures you can tread in awe between. Afterwards, carry on along the same route, casting your eye over the plains spreading out below.

    Guayadeque valley: 16.5km, 6hrs; ascent 690m /descent 1120m
    Head up and over the hills above Temisas then drop steeply into Gran Canaria’s largest valley, Guayadeque. Here, there’s an away-from-it-all feeling as you walk the well-waymarked ancient paths, looking back over the kilometres you’ve already completed. You also pass by the Museo de Guayadeque, which you’re free to pop into to discover more about the area.
  • Agüimes to Cruz de Tejeda: 15km, 5.5hrs; ascent 670m/descent 1120m
    Transfer from Agüimes to Pico de las Nieves, the highest point on the island, where you’re treated to iconic views of Roque Nublo ('Cloud Rock'). After admiring this 67-metre-high basalt rock needle, which the island's first inhabitants held sacred, you descend along a trail to a hamlet before ascending to a ridge and skirting the dramatic Tejeda ravine with expansive views over the Roque Nublo Rural Park. A final descent brings you back to Cruz de Tejeda and your hotel.
  • Choice of routes from Tejeda: 8.5km to 14km
    We offer two scenic routes from the Parador: a breathtaking route to the cave village of Artenara; and an exploration of the Tejeda Valley.

    Out-and-back walk to Artenara: 14km, 6hrs; ascent/descent 765m
    This route from the Parador ranks as one of the best walks on the island. Follow a truly stunning ridge above the deep valleys of the dramatic Caldera de Tejeda and the Parque Rural Roque de Nublo. Passing ceremonial caves used by the island's first inhabitants en route, your path descends through fragrant pine forest to the fascinating cave village of Artenara, the island's highest settlement. Once there you can see what cave living is like by visiting the cave museum; enjoy more breathtaking vistas from the village's balcony location on the lip of the caldera; and visit a chapel entirely carved into a cave – pulpit included. You can halve the distance shown above by returning to the Parador by taxi (pay locally).

    Circular walk via Tejeda: 8.5km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 640m
    This final option descends the panoramic Tejeda Valley, where emblematic Roque Bentayga stands guard, flanked by Roque Nublo on the ridge and Mount Teide on the horizon. Your target is Tejeda, one of Gran Canaria's most picturesque villages. Explore its cobbled streets and leafy plazas with views down the valley; call into the bakery to try some of its famous almond cakes; or visit one of its museums, which include a medicinal plants centre. Returning directly from Tejeda to the Parador by taxi (pay locally) will halve the length of the walk.
  • Cruz de Tejeda to Agaete: 16km, 6hrs; ascent 400m/descent 1520m
    After a 15-minute transfer to Artenara, famed for its centuries-old cave dwellings, you traverse through an ever-changing gallery of landscapes. Firstly through pine forest, then zig zag through drier, more arid valleys replete with prickly pears towards Agaete valley, a lush, water-rich haven replete with banana plantations and home to the most northerly coffee plantation in Europe. On the way to your hotel, you also pass through the picturesque white village of San Pedro.
  • Agaete & Puerto de Nieves walk: 14km, 3hrs; shorter option by returning by taxi: 5.5km, 2hrs; ascent/descent 700m
    Head to the edge of Tamabada National Park on Montaña Bibique, passing beneath the Caves of the Ancients, where Gran Canaria's first inhabitants lived as troglodytes. Follow the cliff path down to the charming fishing port of Las Nieves, where restaurants await to offer traditional cuisine and fresh seafood for lunch options. Return on foot via a quiet Valley path or take a taxi.

Not all flights operate daily, and may not run for the entire season. You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time stated in the connecting travel section, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed your accommodation to you. Alternatively, our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice and to make flight bookings for you for any of the options listed above. We charge £35 per person for our flight booking service. Your flights are then covered by our package-booking conditions, which give you greater protection in the event of delay or cancellation, as well as providing ATOL cover.

  • Yes, prior to going on holiday you will be able to download GPX tracks so that you can follow your route on your smartphone or dedicated GPS device if you wish. It’s entirely up to you whether or not you use them – our detailed, step-by-step route notes remain the principal means of guiding you from A to B – but we provide them as a secondary means of navigation for additional reassurance when walking.
  • We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. The fee for this service is £35 per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). More information on flights >
  • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis.   • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
    The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • (Castilian) Spanish is one of several official languages; Catalan, Basque and Gallego have equal status in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, respectively. The currency is the Euro. Spanish time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Spain, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).

  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
