A Bavarian winter walking holiday

for non-skiers

Fairy-tale castles set against a backdrop of the Bavarian Alps draw visitors to the cluster of lakes around Füssen in southernmost Germany each summer. What these visitors don’t realise is that when winter sets in the castles’ enchantment is enhanced even further by the breathtaking mountains and the tranquillity that envelops the landscapes beneath them.
Their loss is your gain. You can enjoy the castles – Hohenschwangau with its bright yellow façade, and loftily located Neuschwanstein, with its graceful turrets and sumptuous décor – in all their splendour, and strike out along scenic paths, relishing the peace and quiet. Füssen itself, where you’ll find a third castle, is also worth a visit, while a ride on the Tegelberg cable car rewards with spellbinding views over the lakes and fanciful towers, and towards the border with Austria. There’s certainly plenty to discover, making this an excellent choice for a winter holiday for non-skiers.

While the castles are full of history, your hosts at the Eggensberger in Hopfen-am-See, where you spend the week, are very forward-thinking, and their high-quality 4-star hotel is not only completely organic, but climate-neutral too. A place where the spa, well-crafted cuisine and other features have all been conceived with your revitalisation in mind.

Our expert says

“If you think being organic and climate-neutral means compromising on comfort, think again. This is a 4-star hotel with delicious yet wholesome cuisine, a relaxing spa and, perhaps best of all, easy access to King Ludwig II’s flamboyant castles, a must-see on any holiday to southern Bavaria.”

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so you can choose to do as much or as little as you like and enjoy this alluring part of Bavaria at your own pace.
  • Explore the local countryside
Nestling at the foot of the imposing Bavarian Alps, right on the border with Austria, this lake and castle-strewn area with its picturesque mountain backdrop is a popular destination for walkers during the summer months, and many of the same paths are accessible in winter. Some of the trails lead direct from Hopfen-am-See itself, while further options can be reached using the local bus service – free with your visitor’s card.

In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our favourite options, including the following three routes:

    Hopfensee: 7km
Starting from the hotel door, this beautiful walk circumnavigates the lake which gives the village its name. The path meanders along the lakeshore, affording views towards the mountains and the village. Finish with refreshments at one of the lakeside restaurants in the village, either in the cosy interior or outside on the terrace depending on the weather.

    Hopfen forest: 6km
Also from the door, this route passes through quiet forests and over rolling hills, offering glimpses of Lake Hopfen, Füssen and the Bavarian Alps beyond.

    Schwansee: 3.5km
Nestled in the forest below the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein is the lake of Schwansee. A circuit of its tranquil waters gives you a different perspective of the castles, with numerous benches at which you can pause and admire the scenery.

  • Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau
No stay in this corner of Bavaria would be complete without a visit to King Ludwig II’s castles. The bright yellow neo-Gothic Hohenschwangau was Ludwig’s childhood home, whilst Neuschwanstein, the inspiration for the Disney castle, was his own creation, an outlet for his vivid and romantic imagination, perched impossibly on an outcrop against a stunning mountain backdrop. Although the interior was never finished, the rooms that were completed are extraordinary, with intricate attention to detail and tributes to Wagnerian operas in the extravagant décor. The jewel in the crown is the ornate Minstrel’s Gallery.

  • Füssen & Tegelberg

    Füssen
Set on the southern starting part of the Romantische Straße (Romantic Road), the pretty town of Füssen is a delight to wander around – look out for reminders of the town’s former significance as the cradle of the violin and lute-making industry. Dominating the town is the Hohes Schloss, a castle that served as the late summer residence of the Prince Bishops. Its inner courtyard boasts some impressive examples of trompe l’œil, while the splendid Rittersaal is adorned with late Gothic and Renaissance paintings and sculptures. You can also visit the 9th-century Benedictine monastery whose rooms are full of Baroque splendour and house the town’s museum.

    Tegelberg
Tegelberg is the 1,730-metre peak behind Neuschwanstein Castle. A ride in the cable car not only allows you to see the castle’s turrets from close up as you ascend, but also rewards with sweeping views. Near the top station, King Ludwig II’s former hunting lodge is now a panoramic restaurant serving tasty Bavarian specialities.

  • You can reach the Biohotel Eggensberger in a day’s travel from London, changing in Brussels to take a high-speed German ICE train via Frankfurt to Munich. Beyond Munich you slow down for the last leg of your journey, enjoying a scenic ride towards the Bavarian Alps that is followed by a short transfer to your hotel.

If you would prefer an alternative route, our rail specialists can tailor the arrangements to suit you. For example, you may prefer to break your journey with an overnight stay at the historic Hotel Torbräu in the heart of  Munich's old town, where you'll find plenty of restaurants offering tasty Bavarian dishes. You continue your journey the following morning to Füssen, enjoying the best of the views by daylight.

FAQs

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • Living far from the capital ourselves, we know better than most that flying from London can be a bind, so we are very flexible with our travel arrangements. Call or email us, and one of the team will be happy to list the different options available to you, and any price implications.
  • Absolutely! We are experts in tailored rail travel. Making use of sleeper trains or stopovers in cities along the route, we can get you from London to virtually anywhere in mainland Europe. We can even make arrangements to Mallorca, Sicily and Norway with a combination of ferries and rail. Please contact us to discuss your plans.
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Germany, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The official language is German. The currency is the Euro. German time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
  • For information on the practicalities of travel now that the UK is no longer part of the European Union, visit www.gov.uk/visit-eu-switzerland-norway-iceland-liechtenstein.
  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.
