Best for beginners

Inntravel Destination Experts, 11 February, 2026
We asked our team of destination experts where they recommend for anyone new to walking holidays and if they have any top tips for those embarking on their next adventure.
Which of your itineraries would you recommend for a complete beginner? And why?
James-Keane,-Destination-Expert.pngleft-quote.pngIt has to be A Stroll in the Italian Dolomites.

Few holidays in the beautiful Italian Dolomites are as relaxing as this walking tour, where you can choose to walk as much or as little as you like from your base in the picture-perfect village of Ortisei in Val Gardena.

You are ideally placed to enjoy gentle strolls in the valley along with equally easy routes in the high mountain landscapes of the Dolomites by using cable cars and a scenic funicular railway to reach the walks.

What’s your most popular walking holiday in the UK? And why?

left-quote.pngOur most popular walking holiday in the UK is Northumberland Coast Path & Craig_Polaroid.pngCastles. It’s the perfect blend of history, nature, and coastal beauty!

There’s spectacular scenery, from dramatic coastlines to rolling hills and vast sandy beaches. Historic landmarks like Bamburgh, Warkworth, and Alnwick castles are also within easy reach.

You follow the Northumberland Coast Path, but you can adapt your walks using the excellent local bus network.right-quote-(1).png

What’s your most popular walking holiday abroad? And why?
Malcolm-Parkinson_Polaroid.png
left-quote.pngDefinitely Along the Catalan Coast. It’s a grade 1 holiday, so it’s excellent for beginners, with a combination of quiet coastline, fishing villages, and medieval towns. 2025 marked 30 years of this holiday, so it’s a long-standing favourite, where you can enjoy easy walks and stay at a selection of good quality hotels.right-quote-(1).png

Any top tips for walking holiday first timers that you would like to share?
Rebecca:

• Map reading skills are not essential - we take great pride in our route guides, updating them regularly to ensure the details are current, you just need to follow the directions and enjoy the scenery.

• Our customers do not need a wealth of kit – a good comfortable pair of walking shoes (not brand new), a waterproof jacket, a good day sack, a power pack to keep that mobile battery charged up if you're using GPS, a wide brimmed hat (good for both sun and rain), and you're good to go!

• Routes are detailed by written route notes and accompanied by full GPS navigation route planning for use on a GPS app of the customer's choice.

• For itinerant holidays where you walk from hotel-to-hotel, the luggage is transported for you, all you need is a day pack with water, refreshments and any extra necessary clothing (waterproofs, sunhat etc).

• On centre-based holidays you can choose what to do each day; walk, sightsee or rest. With a host of suggestions in our holiday information guide, the choice is yours!

• Not being part of a group means you can stay in characterful hotels and guesthouses, and enjoy being part of the local community. You can also walk at a pace that suits you, stopping when you want and where you want.
