Etruscan Hills to the Sea

From Tuscany’s quiet hinterland to Baratti Bay

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • timeless countryside and a beguiling coast
  • wild and unspoiled natural beauty
  • fascinating archaeological remains
  • high-quality accommodation with good food

La Maremma is a wild and somewhat secretive part of Tuscany, studded with ancient farmhouses and once populated only by migrant charcoal burners, wandering shepherds and butteri  (cowboys tending the region’s oxen and horses). Today, it’s an ideal region to explore on foot – the silent, unspoiled interior leading to the sparkling waters of the Ligurian Sea.

Beyond that door lies an unknown world...where we can become immortal if we choose.

“The Etruscan” – Linda Lappin

The natural beauty here is something to behold – and to cherish. Tranquillity reigns amid the broad plains, hill-top towns and walking paths, many of which can be enjoyed without meeting another soul. Listen to the sound of the birds, and the breeze whispering through the trees, as you sense the long-lost but ever-mysterious presence of the Etruscans, once Rome’s nearest neighbours, and enjoy panoramic glimpses of the sea. It is here that you end up, alongside the tranquil charms of Baratti Bay with its archaeological park (the remarkable legacy of these ‘first Tuscans’), having savoured some excellent food and robust red wines along the way.
