Enjoy a combination of cycling, walking and sightseeing on a non-group activity holiday. Completely self-guided, you can explore at your own pace, carrying just the essentials for the day – we arrange luggage transfers, and provide you with a high-quality bike and our meticulously compiled route notes and maps.
We recognise that many people like a variety of activities during their time away. This is exactly what our Wheels & Wanderings holidays promise to deliver. As on our other cycling holidays, you travel from hotel to hotel by bike but, crucially, the non-itinerant days feature other activities, be it walking, sightseeing or wine-tasting so that you can gain different perspectives of the region you are visiting.
Of course, you needn’t do anything at all on your non-cycling days if you don’t want to – if you would prefer a day of relaxation, it is entirely up to you.
For a combination of impossibly pretty villages, crumbling castles, and superb wines on your activity holiday, head to Alsace in eastern France. If you are looking for a mix of inland and coastal scenery, choose Catalonia in Spain.
Travelling from outside the UK?
To give you a good idea of how we can tailor our trips to your individual requirements, take a look at the section of the website specifically devoted to travellers from outside the UK.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to get the low-down on Inntravel holidays from someone who has first-hand experience, you can email Phil Wise. Based in California, Phil has taken many trips with us over the years, and will be happy to give you general information about travelling to Europe and the overall Inntravel holiday experience from an American perspective.
How our activity holidays are graded
Inntravel’s Wheels & Wanderings activity holidays are designed for ‘amateur’ and/or occasional cyclists, with the emphasis squarely on leisurely exploration. Some are easier than others, however, so we grade them as follows. (Our grading system assumes you are using a ‘regular’ bike, so if you choose an e-bike, bear in mind that the cycling will be considerably easier.)
Grade 1
Easy cycling for all with shorter days mainly on the flat, but some gentle ascents.
Grade 1-2
Easy-to-moderate cycling featuring undulating routes with more frequent short ascents, and a mix of shorter and longer days.
Grade 2
Moderate cycling with some longer, steady uphill sections, and longer days.
Grade 2-3
Fairly strenuous cycling featuring longer days with some sustained climbs. (We don't currently have any holidays at this level.)
Activity holidays, Inntravel style
There are three cornerstones to our hotel-to-hotel cycling holidays (and Inntravel holidays in general): timeless scenery; warmly welcoming, hand-picked accommodation of character; and excellent regional cuisine.
Route notes you can rely on
We take pride in producing route guides with all the information you’ll ever need, and update them continually, so you can trust their accuracy. As well as containing directions from A to B to C, which you follow at your own pace, they enrich your holiday experience by telling you about the places you pass through, local traditions, and more.
Make the holiday your own
An independent holiday means no set start date, no set duration, no set travel arrangements. So tell us if/where you wish to add extra nights, how and from where you’d like to travel (we can book bespoke travel arrangements by air, rail or ferry), and enjoy staying at more intimate hotels and having no fixed timetable as you explore.
