Where to go walking in Switzerland

For mountain walking, the Swiss Alps are hard to beat. If you’d like to see famous peaks up close, the best Inntravel walking holidays in Switzerland are From the Eiger to the Matterhorn, the Tour du Mont Blanc and The High Route. For greater emphasis on lakes, head to Lake Lucerne. Or, if you’d prefer to get off the beaten track, we’d recommend the Engadine in easternmost Switzerland.

How are our walking holidays in Switzerland graded?

Walking holidays such as the Eiger to the Matterhorn, the Tour du Mont Blanc or the aptly named High Route are perfect for keen hikers, but you don’t have to be super fit to walk in the Swiss Alps – we also have walking holidays in Switzerland for people of average fitness: a perfect example being our exploration of Lake Lucerne. Alternatively, our walking holidays in the Bernese Oberland and Engadine Valley give you the choice of a challenging route or a slightly easier option on most days. Here’s how we grade our holidays:
  • Enjoy gentle walking in glorious scenery on our Swiss Alps Stroll with Lake Lucerne. Routes range from 5-10km and take you across meadows, through forest, and along mountain and lakeside paths. There's lots to see and do beyond the trails, too – including riding Europe's steepest cog railway, and exploring Lucerne's beautiful Old Town.
  • As a rule, we don't offer guided walking at Inntravel, but for a few weeks every year you can enjoy a special wildflower experience in the Engadine Valley. Five walks with an experienced guide are included, and on these you explore larch woods, riverside paths, crystal-clear lakes, pretty villages and verdant meadows, seeking out the region's best wildflower displays along the way. The walks are generally 2.5-4.5 hours in length, with ascents and/or descents of between 300 and 700 metres.
  • Typically, days on our walking holidays along the Via Spluga and in the Engadine Valley range between 10-20km and involve significant ascent and descent. The terrain is varied – from meadows to mountains – but your efforts are amply rewarded: with excellent views, absorbing history, and rich natural interest.
  • Right at the top end of our Swiss range are walking routes between the Eiger and Matterhorn, along the Tour du Mont Blanc, in the High Bernese Oberland, and the Valais region. These holidays promise challenge and fulfillment – achieved through full days on the trails, testing ascents and descents, and traversing the dramatic, rugged terrain unique to these exceptional high mountain landscapes.
  • Inntravel walking holidays in Zermatt and the valleys of the Bernese Oberland offer a choice of easier or harder routes, so that you can tailor most days to your requirements. In the Bernese Oberland, expect classic, high-mountain routes of grade 2-3 and 3 difficulty. If you're looking for something a little easier, our Zermatt short break presents the full spectrum of grade 1-3 walking.
