The lush, green landscapes of northern Spain are ideal for leisurely exploration. Fertile hills tumble down to secluded beaches and charming fishing coves; the Picos de Europa provide a striking backdrop; and the civilised regional capital, Oviedo, is packed with art, history and traditional Asturian cider bars.
There are certain places where the passing of the years seems to have gone largely unnoticed, or at least unheeded. One such area is Asturias in the north of Spain, where hórreos (granaries on stone ‘stilts’) dot the rolling green hills, and authentic fishing villages nestle on the Atlantic Coast above virgin beaches.
Just a few miles inland rise the rugged Picos de Europa mountains, home to bears, vultures, and wild Asturcón ponies which graze the slopes. Here, ancient paths link timeless villages where authentic Asturian casonas – atmospheric village houses – offer delicious traditional cooking and a genuine welcome in inspirational surroundings.
