Holiday information

A guided walking holiday in the foothills of the Atlas

Less than sixty kilometres south of Marrakesh rise the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Watered by the snow that caps the highest peaks for much of the winter, the valleys here are green and fertile, planted with apple, peach, cherry and apricot orchards, and dotted with isolated Berber villages linked by ancient mule trails that are still used by traders to this day.
Accompanied by your own friendly guide, who lets you set the pace and really brings the holiday to life for you, you walk predominantly along well-defined paths and mule tracks beside rivers and along the sides of fertile valleys. There are few ascents and descents and you pass through authentic, timeless villages where traditional ways of life continue to this day. Tranquillity reigns in these lush valleys, so different from chaotic but thrilling Marrakesh, where you start your holiday.

In the Atlas Mountains, the temperatures will be cooler than those shown above, and may drop to around freezing at night during the coldest months of the year.

  • Arrival in Marrakesh
Night 1: at Riad Daria in Marrakesh (the first of 3 nights here).
As your first night's accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of exploration.
  • Explore Marrakesh
Take your time to experience the unique atmosphere of Marrakesh, which is surrounded by ochre-coloured ramparts. To help you get your bearings, we include a half-day orientation tour which introduces you to the souks (markets) and finishes at Djemaa El Fna, the large open square that forms the heart of the city. It is here that dozens of acrobats, musicians, dancers and storytellers gather to amuse the crowds.
    Around Marakesh
  • Travel from Marrakesh to Ouirgane
Today you are transferred to your second base, the Hotel Tatfi de l'Atlas in Ouirgane, where you stay four nights and where your walking guide will meet you each morning. The huge contrast between Marrakesh and the High Atlas Mountains will become increasingly apparent during the 90-minute transfer.
  • Circular walk via Tassa Ouirgane: 11km, 5hrs
This route is a good introduction to the lush valleys and gentle foothills of the Ouirgane valley, with its workaday Berber villages. The walk begins by traversing an undulating moonscape of red soil, peppered with juniper trees, mastic and oleander. You then descend to cross a river and follow an ancient mule track up through walnut, pomegranate and plum trees to reach the village of Anraz. From here, trails wind past carob and olive groves, via the settlement of Tassa Ouirgane, back to your hotel.
  • Linear walk via Tin-Mal (with transfers): 9km, 4hrs
This route starts and ends with a transfer. From the drop-off point, your guide leads you past several Berber villages to reach the kasbah of Agadir n’Gouf, once the stronghold of the Berber Goundafa tribe. Nowadays storks nest in the ramparts, but you can still see examples of the ornate decoration. Setting off once more, you pass another ruined kasbah and head along a riverside path past olive, walnut and almond groves to enter an enchanting hidden valley, where the clear waters of the river are full of trout. Further along the valley is the fortified settlement of Tin-Mal. The mosque here is the only one in Morocco that can be visited by non-Muslims (except on Fridays), and it is a real privilege to see the carefully restored décor, an excellent example of intricate Almohad design.
    Walk to Tin Mal Mosque
  • Linear walk via Tizi n'Tarabaza (return by transfer): 13km, 5hrs
You set off along mule tracks to the village of Imareghan Noufla, where ancient presses are still used to extract oil from the olives harvested from the surrounding groves. From here, your path winds through fields of maize and seasonal wild flowers, passing other traditional villages. Salt is mined in the area and you may encounter salt sellers, usually the village women, transporting their goods. You then ascend to the summit of Tizi n'Tarabaza, pausing to admire the splendid views over the Tarabaza Plateau and the Oussertek Desert before descending to the pick-up point for the transfer back to Ouirgane.

You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time stated in the connecting travel section, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed your accommodation to you. Alternatively, our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice and to make flight bookings for you. We charge £30 per person for our flight booking service (£50 for India and Nepal). Your flights are then covered by our package-booking conditions, which give you greater protection in the event of delay or cancellation, as well as providing ATOL cover.

If you've experienced this holiday first hand, why not write a review?

FAQs

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • It means that you explore as individuals, not as a group, in the company of your own local guide. Because there's no group to consider, it's you who sets the pace and, similarly, you are free to pause to take in the views as often as you like. Your guide (often a different one for each part of your holiday) will be an English-speaking local who knows the local area intimately. Smiling and courteous, they can read the skies to predict the weather and tailor the excursions accordingly. Theirs is a discreet form of guiding, letting you appreciate the landscapes for yourselves as they lead the way.
  • British citizens require a full British passport to enter Morocco, but no visa is required for stays of fewer than 90 days. Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Morocco. No additional period of validity beyond this is required.
  • The NHS website www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk gives a general outline of the immunisations you are likely to need, though you should seek advice from your doctor or practice nurse in good time before your holiday for more tailored information.
Because there are no reciprocal health agreements between the UK and Morocco, it is all the more important that you have comprehensive travel insurance to cover you in the case of illness or an accident.
  • Arabic is the official language, but French is very widely spoken.
  • Morocco is one hour ahead of Britain all year round (although the exact date that the clocks go forward in spring and back in autumn may differ slightly; if you are travelling in late March or October, please check locally).
  • So as not to cause offence, it is best to dress modestly with long trousers (or a skirt) and long sleeves. If you are female, you are not expected to cover your head, however.
  • We can book a wide range of airlines and routes from the UK. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. For Europe and Morocco, there’s a £30 booking fee per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). For India and Nepal, the booking fee is £50 per person. More information on flights >
  • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis. More information about how we can tailor holidays for customers outside the UK >
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.
  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

You don’t have to buy our policy (if you live outside Europe you’ll definitely need to make your own arrangements, as the policy is only for UK and EU residents), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.
  • The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.
If you live outside the UK, see our essential travel information page for a list of relevant websites.
