Away from the hustle and bustle of ski resorts, winter walking brings a unique opportunity to connect with the outdoors. From picturesque trails to essential tips for a winter holiday, find out why a winter walking holiday is the perfect way to embrace the season’s charm.

Tell us what an Inntravel winter walking holiday is?
The exact opposite of a skiing holiday! The chance to enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery during the winter months, when a dusting of snow does not grind everything to a halt. Depending on the conditions, you can either follow our chosen routes on a crisp winter day marvelling at the snow-capped peaks around you, or if there has been a fall of snow, on specially flattened trails which are suitable for normal walking boots.
What makes winter walking such a special experience compared to the warmer months?
It is about more than just the walking. It's about being outdoors on a cold winter’s day, stopping en route at a mountain hut and sitting in front of a roaring fire as you warm up with a hot chocolate before continuing on your way.
What is it about winter walking that captivates you?
There is something quite special about crisp, wintery landscapes under a deep blue sky, surrounded by the drama of the snow-capped peaks. The air also feels so fresh when you are out and about.

Which Inntravel winter walking holiday stands out as your favourite, and what makes it unforgettable?
Guarda in Switzerland is hard to beat for winter walking. A quiet village set in the lesser-known Engadine region of eastern Switzerland, the centuries-old Hotel Meisser offers a wonderful welcome from the Meisser family who have been at the helm for six generations. There's also access to some wonderful walking trails directly from the door of the hotel, which skirt along the sides of the valley, or you can use the efficient Swiss transport network to access a bit further afield.
What should Inntravellers consider when choosing a winter walking holiday?
To come prepared for all weather. Whilst walking through a snowy forest on a blue sky day after a recent snowfall is quite magical, there is also something special about hunkering down in a cosy hotel and watching the weather roll through.
What would you say to anyone considering a winter walking holiday?
Anyone can do it! No previous experience, special technique or specific clothing is required, and it is a wonderful way to appreciate the tranquillity of your surroundings. In some of our destinations, you can also use the mountain transport, which is accessible not just for skiers, taking you up to some magical viewpoints.
Inntravel’s team of experienced walking enthusiasts are happy to help you with any aspect of planning your winter walking holiday, from finding the perfect destination to tips on preparing properly for cold walking weather.
