“This is a funny little book. It manages to tell you all about the Nazi occupation of Guernsey while simultaneously charming your socks off. Set just after the Second World War, it’s told via letters between a London writer and a rag-tag bunch of Guernsey residents who are members of the titular society. Through these letters, we learn about all the privations and struggles of the war years: children were evacuated, radios banned, and islanders sent to evacuation camps. Juliet, the main character, eventually travels to Guernsey herself and sees the scars of war, but she’s also enchanted by island and its people. In that regard, Guernsey hasn’t changed too much – this is still an island that has the power to intoxicate.”
