Golden Dunes of the Costa Verde

Sardinia - from silver mountains to golden dunes
Starting point:

Hotel Sardus Pater near Portixeddu for two nights

Day 1
Cala Domestica to Portixeddu: 16km, 5hrs
Shorter option if taking bus from Buggerru: 9km, 3hrs

On your day at Portixeddu, relax or choose to take a short transfer to Cala Domestica (one of the most picturesque bays of southern Sardinia) to walk back across limestone plateau above dramatic coastline to village of Buggerru, (pronounced 'boo jerr oo')where you can stop off for lunch. Choose to continue on foot back to Portixeddu or return by local bus.

Day 2
Portixeddu to Ingurtosu: 13km, 4hrs

Starting from the hotel, you head north parallel to the panoramic coastline to reach the evocative headland of Capo Pecora, continuing to the small pass of ‘La Vedetta’ (alt 200m) where a wonderful and far-reaching view emerges over the Costa Verde with the prolific peak of Monte Arcentu in the background. A descent now beckons to the coastline at Scivu – a long wild sandy beach backed by sand dunes where you have time for a swim before your transfer arrives to take you to your next hotel Sa Perda Marcada, an agriturismo near to Ingurtosu.

Day 3
Ingurtosu to Montevecchio: 17km, 5hrs

Today, you follow old miners' trails past abandoned mine buildings and through lush vegetation to reach your next base. En route, you have time to explore the fascinating old zinc and lead mines – mineshafts with their original equipment, former factories and workers’ villages, all set amid lush holm and cork-oak woods, nowadays home to a colony of Sardinian deer. To learn more about mining and the wealth it brought to the island, visit the museum when you arrive in Montevecchio. Your hotel for the next two nights is La Miniera Fiorita, a delightful guesthouse in Montevecchio.

Day 4
Circular walk via Monte Arcuente: 14km, 5hrs

A demanding, but thoroughly rewarding, circuit starts with a transfer then leads through broom for the short but steep ascent through basalt walls to the legendary 'Mountain of Hercules', Monte Arcuente, a dormant volcano that boasts unrivalled views from its summit over western Sardinia. You descend gradually across pastureland back towards Montevecchio.

Day 5
Montevecchio to Piscinas: 18km, 5hrs

From Montevecchio, you head towards the coast on gently meandering footpaths that criss-cross the glistening River Ruggeri and its wooded tributaries, whose waters change from milky white to rusty red from the residues of the mines upstream. Your destination is the immense Piscinas Beach and the wonderful sight of golden sand dunes. Here you spend your final two nights at the Residence Sciopadroxiu, a series of intimate bungalows by the dunes, or you can choose to upgrade to the luxurious Hotel Le Dune.

Day 6
Circular walk via Ingurtosu: 18.5km, 5hrs (from Hotel Le Dune); 15km, 3.5hrs (from Residence Sciopadroxiu)

A final circuit heads inland, following a river upstream through a small canyon before rising though Mediterranean scrub to join a disused railway. Continue towards the old village of Ingurtosu, passing buildings of great artistic industrial interest, such as the Brassey washery, named after its English owner, the Viscount of Brassey, and a multi-media museum (pay locally) dedicated to the area's rich industrial past.
Alternatively, spend the day exploring the UNESCO-protected Piscinas dune range, one of the biggest in Europe that stretches for several kilometres along the Costa Verde. Coated in juniper and Mediterranean scrub, the dunes reach heights of up to 50 metres in places. It is not uncommon to spot Sardinian deer as you walk.
