Casa do Visconde de Chanceleiros (manor house), Chanceleiros

The food here is excellent, and our dinner arrangements include white port, wine and liqueurs. A wonderful choice for extra nights to relax and enjoy the views.

Sapientia Boutique Hotel (4*), Coimbra

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Sapientia Boutique Hotel
This elegant boutique hotel is located in the heart of the old city within a few minutes' walk of the cathedral and one of the oldest universities in the world. It is housed in three 18th and 19th-century buildings, combining traditional features with all the amenities of a modern, stylish hotel. The design of the rooms pays homage to figures of Portuguese literature, while the in-house tapas bar serves tasty meals which you can enjoy on the patio in the shade of an ancient walnut tree. On the roof, there is a panoramic terrace from which to watch the sun go down over the city.

Quinta das Lágrimas (5*), Coimbra

Alternative accommodation
Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Quinta das Lágrimas
This handsome, beautifully converted 14th-century mansion is set in 12 hectares of tranquil parkland which incorporates a botanical garden and outdoor pool. The sense of space outside is mirrored inside, with spacious public lounges, a spa and an indoor pool. It is located just over the river from the Old Town and its eateries, a 15-minute walk, but as the hotel boasts an excellent restaurant, you may well decide not to venture out. For extra comfort, upgrade to a ‘palace room’ in the main house.

Solar do Castelo (4*), Lisbon

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Solar do Castelo
Enviably located within the walls of Lisbon’s famous castle at the top of the oldest quarter of the city, Alfama, this elegant 18th-century mansion is arguably the best place to stay in Lisbon. The superb location is complemented by exceptionally friendly service, stylish rooms (equipped with air conditioning, satellite television, a safe, hairdryer and free wifi) and plenty of space to relax, including a courtyard, garden, lounges and a library.

Lawrence's Hotel (historic hotel), Sintra

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Built in 1764, this is the oldest hotel of the Iberian Peninsula, and your stay here is like travelling back in time. The rooms are not numbered, but named after famous writers and poets who stayed here, each with its own unique atmosphere and style. Lord Byron was just one of many famous poets who penned works here and, as you relax in an antique armchair in your room, you can leaf through the pages of their works or biographies of them, while the artists themselves gaze down at you from faded photographs. The hotel has a couple of small comfortable sitting rooms, a bar and a restaurant. However, it is its central location that invites you to explore the surrounding cobbled lanes, squares and gardens, where you will find a wide range of places to dine or have a drink. Just a few steps away, are the Tourist Information Office, and the departure point for the two bus routes which take you to four of Sintra's superb historic palaces.
