It is located just over the river from the Old Town and its eateries, a 15-minute walk, but as the hotel boasts an excellent restaurant, you may well decide not to venture out. For extra comfort, upgrade to a ‘palace room’ in the main house.

Lawrence's Hotel (historic hotel), Sintra

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Lawrence
Built in 1764, this is the oldest hotel of the Iberian Peninsula, and your stay here is like travelling back in time. The rooms are not numbered, but named after famous writers and poets who stayed here, each with its own unique atmosphere and style. Lord Byron was just one of many famous poets who penned works here and, as you relax in an antique armchair in your room, you can leaf through the pages of their works or biographies of them, while the artists themselves gaze down at you from faded photographs. The hotel has a couple of small comfortable sitting rooms, a bar and a restaurant. However, it is its central location that invites you to explore the surrounding cobbled lanes, squares and gardens, where you will find a wide range of places to dine or have a drink. Just a few steps away, are the Tourist Information Office, and the departure point for the two bus routes which take you to four of Sintra's superb historic palaces.

Tivoli Palacio de Seteais (5*), Sintra

Optional upgrade
Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Tivoli Palacio de Seteais
This luxurious hotel is housed in a neo-Classical palace, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Surrounded by large, landscaped gardens with fruit trees, the palace was built in the 1780s for the Dutch consul, and enlarged over the years under a succession of owners. The original house is now just one wing, linked to the other by a monumental arch, decorated with bronze effigies, that was built in 1802. The hotel retains much of the palace's original character; the 30 beautiful rooms are individually decorated and furnished, while the ballroom boasts tapestries and frescoes that make any stay here an unforgettable experience. Savour delicious delicacies and traditional Portuguese cuisine in the stylish restaurant or enjoy a cocktail in the bar or on the terrace, while enjoying expansive views of the Sintra hills. There is also an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and reading room. If you prefer to dine out, the hotel is only a short stroll from the town centre where there is a good choice of restaurants.
