Beautiful Sils

The Glacier Express is not just one of the most panoramic rail journeys in Europe, but anywhere in the world, and a trip aboard this very famous train is the perfect way to round off your highly scenic journey through Switzerland, which has also featured such other iconic railways as the Jungfraujochbahn and Gornergrat cog railway. Once you reach the end of the line, and the beautifully unspoiled Engadine Valley, further delights await – including a wonderfully welcoming hotel; a host of pretty, frescoed villages; glamorous St Moritz; and Switzerland’s only national park.
Or, for one final train ride, you could travel into Italy on the spectacular Bernina Express, an impressively engineered line passing through viaducts and tunnels which have earned it a UNESCO World Heritage listing.

  • Take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Sils
Today brings a relaxed yet exhilarating journey on the Glacier Express, known as ‘the world’s slowest express train’. Departing from Zermatt, you pass the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps, before descending through the Rhône Valley to then wind upwards to the spectacular Oberalp Pass. A dramatic descent through the Rhine Valley ensues, after which you continue south through a narrow valley and on to beautiful St Moritz, the world-renowned alpine resort. From St Moritz it’s just a short bus ride to nearby Sils, where you’ll spend the next three nights at the lovely Hotel Privata.
  • Explore from Sils
Despite its beauty, the Engadine Valley remains a well-kept secret, with much to discover:

Circular walk in the Swiss National Park: 13km, 3.5hrs; 500m ascent/550m descent
This route in Switzerland’s only National Park is considered a ‘must-do’, with the opportunity to see wildlife including red deer and even chamoix, ibex and golden eagles if you are lucky. The loop takes you up one side of a valley and back down the other, the real joy of the walk being discovering scenery as nature intended it.

    Visit St Moritz
The glitz and glamour of neighbouring St Moritz seems a world apart from the tranquillity of Sils, despite being only a 20-minute bus journey away. Take some time to window-shop at the up-market boutiques which line the streets, or visit the famous Hanselmann café and cake shop to sample some of the delicious confectionary on sale.

    Ride the Bernina Express
St Moritz is also the northern terminus for the Bernina Express, a narrow-gauge railway which crosses the Alps to reach Tirano in Italy via an incredible 55 tunnels and 196 bridges. It is considered one of the most spectacular of all the Alpine crossings, with a wide variety of scenery – from green valleys to snow-capped mountains and pine forests to glaciers and waterfalls.

Take a trip to Muottas Muragl
Less well-known, but still wonderfully scenic, is the journey to Muottas Muragl, a high mountain plateau in the Upper Engadine which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, valleys and lakes. There is an excellent restaurant at the top, as well as a panoramic trail with views across the lakes and Bernina Massif.
