Vibrant Naples & the spectacular Amalfi Coast

Energetic and historic Naples has given the world pizza, Caruso and Sophia Loren; and has seemingly made chaotic disorder into an art form. The city is dominated by the ever-present bulk of Mount Vesuvius, and boasts an astonishingly rich cultural and architectural heritage. By contrast, glamourous Ravello is known for its terraced gardens and open-air concerts, and is a beautiful place to relax.
What is common to both, however, is their location on this most beautiful of coastlines, where picturesque villages appear to defy logic as they cling precariously to near-vertical hillsides, and steep mountains plunge dramatically into the sparkling sea.

  • Rome to Naples: 1hr by train
Remarkably, it’s little over an hour by train from Rome to reach the endlessly colourful melting-pot that is Naples, where you stay for two nights at the elegant Palazzo Alabardieri, just a few steps from the seafront and the Old Town.
  • Explore Naples
We suggest that you devote much of today to delving into Naples’ rich history and culture. Discover the 13th-century Castel Nuovo fortress and museum; the Centro Storico (‘Old Town’) with its dozens of churches (including Baroque Gesú Nuovo) and antiquities; the Lungomare, Naples’ attractive seafront promenade; and the Museum and Art Gallery of Capodimonte. It is also worth heading out to Caserta to admire the Royal Palace – once the pride of the Bourbon Kings, it is set amid splendid parkland with pools and sparkling cascades.
Alternatively (or in addition, if you decide to add an extra night), you can hop on another train to explore the archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii. These two tragic freeze-frames of history – Herculaneum drowned under a sea of mud, while its larger and more famous neighbour was buried under layers of volcanic ash – comprise a twin time-capsule of epic significance, and make for one of the most compelling days out imaginable.
  • Naples to Ravello: 1.5hrs by taxi
For once forsaking the train, today we include a direct taxi journey to compelling Ravello at the heart of the Amalfi Coast. (If you wish, and if you haven’t visited Herculaneum or Pompeii already, we can arrange for the taxi driver to drop you off and wait for a few hours while you explore one of these impressive sites before continuing to Ravello. A supplement is payable, so please ask for details.) Once in Ravello, your last three nights are spent at the delightful Villa Maria with its panoramic terrace and sumptuous coastal views
  • Explore Ravello & the surrounding area
The final part of your trip is all about relaxation amid glorious surroundings. Explore exclusive Ravello itself, which forms a balcony overlooking the Amalfi Coast; admire the fabulous formal gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo; or, using the local bus, pay a visit to the handsome towns of Amalfi, Positano or Sorrento nearby. The star of the show, though, is the coastline itself, and you can lap up the views during this suitably spectacular finale to your Grand Tour of Italy.

Your hotel in Naples has been chosen for its high quality and convenient location. The Villa Maria, meanwhile, in the exquisite town of Ravello, offers sublime coastal views to finish.
