Holiday information

Medieval Alghero

Spanish-style palazzi and the sound of Catalan in the air may not be what you would expect from a Sardinian town, but Alghero’s rich and varied heritage is what makes it such a fascinating place to visit today. Wander the cobbled streets of the medieval Old Town; take in the impressive sea views from the honey-coloured fortress walls; admire the ornate architecture; and enjoy dishes of freshly caught seafood in one of the excellent eateries.
North of Alghero lies the Porto Conte Natural Park, where you can enjoy leisurely walks through idyllic scenery, and visit the Grotta del Nettuno, one of the most spectacular cave complexes in Italy, as well as the mysterious Valley of the Nuraghi with its 40 archaeological sites.

  • Sant’Antonio di Gallura to Alghero: 2hrs by car
Today you travel by car from Sant’Antonio di Gallura to the Alghero Resort Country Hotel, a charming 18th-century hotel set in the countryside surrounding Alghero.

It will no doubt be difficult to tear yourself away from the hotel’s lovely pool and tranquil gardens, but a visit to vibrant Alghero is a must. Dating from the 11th century, this historic town spent many years under Catalan rule, and as you stroll past Alghero’s ornate churches and wander through the warren of medieval lanes, you will still hear Catalan spoken today. Be sure to climb up onto the fortress walls for impressive sea views, and to call into one of the town’s cafés or restaurants for a delicious seafood lunch.
  • Choice of walks (7km-9.5km) & sightseeing options
We provide notes for two leisurely walks through idyllic scenery, and suggest some lovely sightseeing possibilities:

Circular walk to Monte Timidone: 9.5km, 4hrs
Drive north from Alghero and you will soon come to the forestry reserve of Le Prigionette, a safe haven for many different and interesting species of flora and fauna. Our gentle circuit explores this reserve, with a particular highlight being the 360-degree panorama attained from the peak of Monte Timidone, 424 metres above sea level.

Circular walk to Punta Giglio: 7km, 2hrs
Exploring a similar part of the island, this easy walk heads out to Punta Giglio, a fine viewpoint overlooking the natural harbour of Porto Conte.

    The Grotta di Nettuno
From the majestic limestone promontory of Capo Caccia, at the south-westernmost tip of the Porto Conte Natural Park, 656 steps lead down to the Grotta di Nettuno, a series of pools and passageways, with stalactites and stalagmites forming huge columns and pillars. This grotto can also be reached by boat from Alghero.

    Lake Baratz
Another option for today is to visit Lake Baratz, the only natural lake in Sardinia, a few kilometres north of Porto Conte. The lake is surrounded by sandy dunes and lush pinewood forests, and is home to many birds, turtles and fresh water fish.

You stay in a characterful and tranquil country hotel close to Alghero. Your stay is on a bed and breakfast basis giving you the opportunity to dine in the hotel's own restaurant or at one of the many restaurants in Alghero itself.
