Holiday information

Ancient Agrigento

A stay in Agrigento makes the perfect addition to any holiday to Sicily. From the terrace of your 4-star hotel, you can soak in the superb views of the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO-protected Greco-Roman site, and the town is also well placed for access to the coast, where our routes reveal a rich birdlife, golden, pristine beaches and the Scala dei Turchi, a spectacular white rocky cliff, sculpted by nature. Agrigento itself, once one of the leading cities in the ancient world, has a picturesque historical centre of narrow medieval streets which are a joy to explore, and the nearby Archaeological Museum, built in a former Cistercian monastery, houses many fascinating Greek artefacts.

Itinerary

  • Agrigento & the Valley of the Temples
Leaving your hotel, you head south to spend your final two nights at Hotel Baglio della Luna in Agrigento, overlooking the serene Valley of the Temples.

It is this fascinating archaeological site that we suggest you explore on your first day in Agrigento. Boasting the most impressive set of Doric temples to be found outside of mainland Greece, the Valley of the Temples is set amid an attractive landscape of century-old olive and almond trees, and has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1997. Once you have experienced the temples, or indeed before, you may like to find out more about Agrigento’s history and view ancient treasures at the nearby Archaeological Museum.
  • Circular walk from Eraclea Minoa (8km) & choice of sightseeing options
If you haven’t had the chance to fully explore the Valley of the Temples and Archaeological Museum, you will no doubt wish to devote some time to doing so today. We also recommend a visit to the remarkable Scala dei Turchi, and to the archaeological site of Eraclea Minoa, from where we provide notes for an easy coastal walk.

    Scala dei Turchi
The Scala dei Turchi (‘Stair of the Turks’) is a striking white rocky cliff located approximately 15 kilometres from Agrigento. Formed of soft limestone and brilliant white marl, it has been sculpted by nature into soft meringue-like folds and extends outwards between two sandy beaches, creating a stunning contrast with the blue Adriatic Sea. The Turkish connection comes from the once frequent raids carried out by Turkish and Barbary Coast pirates.

Circular walk from Eraclea Minoa: 8km, 3hrs
Occupying a magnificent spot along the ridge of a secluded hill overlooking the sea, the site of Eraclea Minoa is well worth a visit. Our route leads you down to a sweeping golden beach – one of the most picturesque of Sicily’s south coast, backed by chalky cliffs and the striking headland of Capo Bianco. You will pass a small nature reserve with several camouflaged huts for bird watching, and, if the tide is low, you can return along the shore stopping off at a beachfront restaurant for lunch.
