Holiday information

A winter holiday in Slovenia for non-skiers

In the pretty Alpine village of Bohinjska Bistrica and surrounded by the jagged limestone peaks of the Julian Alps, the elegant façade of the Sunrose 7 Heritage hotel looks out over an avenue of chestnut trees alongside a mountain stream. In summer, this is a delightfully uncrowded spot; in winter, it’s a tranquil idyll.
As well as bestowing the magical winter backdrop of the Triglav National Park, the Bohinj Valley offers a wealth of beauty and interest. Follow lakeside walks in the unparalleled panorama of Lakes Bled and Bohinj; enjoy a guided snowshoe excursion (snow-dependent) or hike through the valley; visit the little town of Radovljica, the centre of Slovenia’s beekeeping industry; experience the romance of a torchlit stroll along the shore of Lake Bohinj; and discover the art of Slovenian cheesemaking on a guided visit to a local cheesemaker.

Return each day to relax in the cosy comfort of the Sunrose 7 boutique hotel which has been refurbished to the highest standards. Retaining many of its original features, complemented by contemporary design using local, natural materials, Sunrose 7 is a leading light of sustainable development. With excellent cuisine which lends a creative twist to premium local ingredients, plus luxurious pampering in its intimate spa, this is the consummate relax, detox and de-stress environment.

Our expert says

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so you can choose to do as much or as little as you like and explore this Slovenian idyll at your own pace.
  • Lakeside splendour
In easy reach of Slovenia’s most iconic lakes by complimentary ski buses (your guest card also gives free travel on local buses), the superb scenery in this part of Slovenia is a magnet for summer visitors. Accessible year-round, you can enjoy those same walks in winter, but without the volume of summer visitors.

In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our three favourite walk options, including the two following routes:

    Lake Bohinj: 6.5km
Slovenia’s largest natural lake, Bohinj is in a basin-shaped glacial valley and its waters reach a depth of 45 metres with no shallows. In winter, the lake can freeze over, occasionally robustly enough to be able to skate on. Beneath its blanket of white, it’s as pretty as a snow globe scene but before the lake freezes and as it begins to thaw, the glacial colours of the waters are bewitching. A short bus ride from the village takes you to the camera-hogging Church of St John the Baptist, from where you join the lakeside path which heads north-east and rounds the north shore to Ukanc to catch the bus back to Bohinjska Bistrica.

    Lake Bled: 6.5km
Just 30mins by bus from the village, Lake Bled is promoted as Slovenia’s top beauty spot, and its image adorns tourism literature. A path circumnavigates the lake, taking in multiple aspects of its views and passing alongside bars, cafes and restaurants. At its centre, Lake Bled Island is considered one of the most beautiful places in Europe and is accessible year-round, provided the lake isn’t frozen, by flat-bottomed boats known as Pletnas. On the island, it’s traditional to climb the 99 steps to ring the wishing bell of St Mary’s Church.
    Lake Bohinj
  • Radovljica & Bled Castle

    Radovljica
Slovenia has a strong tradition of beekeeping, with around five beekeepers to every 1,000 inhabitants. The pretty little town of Radovljica, an easy bus ride away, is at the centre of that tradition. Stroll its medieval old quarter with its defence moat and visit its Museum of Apiculture where you’ll find the largest collection of painted beehives in Slovenia before lunching in one of Slovenia’s Michelin starred restaurants.

    Bled Castle
You may wish to return to Lake Bled and visit its iconic 11th-century castle, perched high above the lake. Inside, you’ll find a museum chronicling its history and the legends that surround it; the frescoed chapel; a print works and a gallery, but it’s the views that really enthral so be sure to choose a day of good visibility.
  • Snowshoeing, torchlit stroll & visit to cheesemaker

    Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a fun and easy way to explore the beautiful Bohinj Valley and we include a guided snowshoe excursion (conditions permitting) or hike in the valley. Once you’ve mastered walking in the shoes, it’s a superb way to enjoy places which, in snow, would be otherwise inaccessible.

    Torchlit stroll
For a unique experience in the romantic setting of a natural lake, we include a guided torchlit stroll by the banks of Lake Bohinj. At the end of your stroll, you may wish to enjoy dinner by the lake (pay locally) before returning to your hotel.

    Visit to cheesemaker
Bohinj is known for its excellent cheeses, and we include a guided walk through the valley to visit a local cheesemaker, taste the cheeses, and learn about the traditions of Slovenia’s Alpine dairy cheesemaking.

  • Cross-country skiing & ice-skating

    Cross-country skiing
If conditions are right, and you wish to spend an afternoon on skis, there are cross-country trails in the valley just beyond the village. Alternatively, take a local bus (1h) to Pokljuka where you’ll find the largest plateau in Slovenia which boasts over 30km of maintained trails.

    Ice-skating
There is a small outdoor rink in the village and, if temperatures are sufficiently low, it’s occasionally possible to skate on Lake Bled.
  • Gourmet celebrations
Featuring the excellent cuisine of the hotel’s Kavarna pod Kostanji restaurant, which specialises in traditional recipes made with fresh, local ingredients and given a culinary contemporary makeover, during the festive season Sunrose 7 serves gourmet menus paired with premium wines. At New Year, there is also live music.

Where you stay

The village of Bohinjska Bistrica (altitude: 509m) enjoyed a tourism boom in the late 1800s which saw the construction of several hotels, the second being what is now Sunrose 7. Then in 1906 the opening of the Bohinj rail tunnel brought visitors in their droves. Today, Bohinjska Bistrica is still a favourite with visitors who come to enjoy its position on the edge of the Triglav National Park, beneath the Julian Alps, and in easy distance of Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. The village has a well-stocked supermarket, a handful of shops and eateries, and the Aquapark Bohinj Wellness Centre and swimming pools.

Not all flights operate daily, and may not run for the entire season. You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time stated above, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. • Combining high-speed Eurostar and TGV you reach elegant Zürich by mid evening. You have time for dinner at one of the many cafes and bistros in the impressive station.

In the late evening, you board the Euronight sleeper to wind between moonlit lakes and mountains before crossing into Austria. Shortly before breakfast you wake to glorious mountain views as the train crosses the border into Slovenia. At Lesce Bled a taxi awaits for a short transfer along the eponymous lake shore to your hotel.

FAQs

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • Living far from the capital ourselves, we know better than most that flying from London can be a bind, so we are very flexible with our travel arrangements. Call or email us, and one of the team will be happy to list the different options available to you, and any price implications.
  • Absolutely! We are experts in tailored rail travel. Making use of sleeper trains or stopovers in cities along the route, we can get you from London to virtually anywhere in mainland Europe. We can even make arrangements to Mallorca, Sicily and Norway with a combination of ferries and rail. Please contact us to discuss your plans.
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Slovenia, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The official language is Slovene, although Italian is spoken by many people along the border with Italy. The currency is the Euro. Slovenian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
  • For information on the practicalities of travel now that the UK is no longer part of the European Union, visit www.gov.uk/visit-eu-switzerland-norway-iceland-liechtenstein.
