Holiday information

The enchanting Gargano Peninsula

Presenting a wonderful contrast to the rest of Puglia, the northerly Gargano Peninsula is characterised by white limestone cliffs, mysterious grottoes, a crystal-clear emerald sea, ancient forests and the highest concentration of wild orchid species to be found anywhere in Europe.
You can enjoy panoramic views of the beautiful Adriatic coastline from your fabulous 4-star hotel, set above the port of Mattinata. From this idyllic base, follow coastal routes to beautiful beaches, explore the peaks of the eastern Gargano, or simply relax, either on your hotel’s private beach or by visiting picturesque, coastal villages and watching the world go by over long lunches of traditional Puglian cuisine.

Itinerary

  • Ostuni to the Gargano Peninsula: 3hrs by car
Today, you drive from Ostuni to the Gargano Peninsula in the far north of the region. There are a number of worthwhile places to visit en route – Castellana Grotte, known for its vast cave formations and well-preserved buildings dating back to the 10th century; the seaport of Trani, once one of the main southern ports on the Adriatic; Margherita di Savoia, whose ancient salt mines have been in operation since the 3rd century BC; and Canne, an ancient Puglian city which rose to fame as the location of Hannibal’s defeat of the Romans in 216BC – one of the worst defeats the Roman army ever suffered.
  • Choice of walks: 5.5km to 10km
We suggest three different routes to explore the south-eastern part of the promontory. If you prefer not to walk, you could visit the seaside towns of Peschici and Vieste or the important centre of pilgrimage of San Giovanni, or simply unwind by the hotel pool, gazing at the white cliffs lapped by the Adriatic’s azure waters.

Circular walk via Vignanotica Bay: 7.5km, 2.5hrs
After a short drive, this route heads through limestone hills to the beautiful bay and beach of Vignanotica.

Circular walk via Monte Saraceno: 10km, 3hrs
Starting from the hotel door, this route heads along the beach towards a wooded ridge, which you ascend to reach Monte Saraceno with its 500 tombs dating back to the ancient Daunia civilisation. The ascent is steep and vertiginous in places but not prolonged, and when you reach the top you are rewarded with a glorious and sweeping view over the bay.

    Out-and-back walk to Monte Sacro: 5.5km, 2hrs
Accessed by car, this short but not-to-be-missed route leads to the lonely peak of Monte Sacro, where concealed in the dense oak woods are the imposing ruins of an ancient Benedictine abbey. In spring, the surrounding slopes and limestone rockeries are adorned with many rare orchids.
    Visit seaside Vieste
