Stretching from the French border all the way to Tuscany, the Ligurian Riviera is a region of spectacular, ever-changing scenery. Wooded slopes plunge dramatically into the glittering Mediterranean, whose shores are dotted with postcard-perfect villages of brightly painted houses and where fishing boats bob contentedly in the sheltered bays.

Although the five charming villages which make up the famed Cinque Terre coastal region are deservedly popular, there is also the opportunity to escape the crowds by exploring the quieter paths high above the coast or the rugged and unspoiled Portofino Peninsula near Camogli – much of which is only accessible on foot or by sea.
