If you've experienced this holiday first hand, why not write a review?
We are keen for as many customers as possible to review their holiday. To make it easier to do so, we include a specific review section on our post-holiday questionnaire, and this is what we publish here, unedited. Read our full review policy >
Two things particularly stay in the mind: the mountain route over Matajur from Italy into Slovenia, in perfect weather, blue skies and breathtaking views. It set the tone for the entire holiday. Secondly, the crystal clear, turquoise waters of the Soca river, whether cascading though narrow gorges or rippling in the shallows.
The area chosen in Slovenia was pretty and interesting to hike through. The history of this area, especially surrounding WWI, was fascinating.
This rates as one of our most enjoyable holidays. The walks were very well chosen and the walking notes excellent and very accurate. We would recommend walking poles for some of the downhill sections of the walks - even in the dry the loose rocks can be quite slippery. The scenery (mountains and the Soca valley and river) were breathtaking and it was wonderful to be in a less crowded part of the world. On reflection, we wish we had included an extra day in Kobarid or Bovec to spend a day kayaking on the river - the water looked very inviting. The food in the restaurants of hotels Locanda Al Castello and Dobra Villa was exceptional. We thoroughly recommend the upgrade at Dobra Villa. Excellent organisation by Inntravel throughout.

Excellent accommodation and food overall. Walk notes were very detailed and precise.
We didn't stay at our preferred choice of Dobra Villa in Bovec, however the Gostisce Martinov Hram was an good alternative. Clean, air con, plenty of hot water and food was good.
This was a dleightful holiday with some fabulous and varied walking in a spectacular part of Europe. All of the hotels and food were of great quality and service was excellent. Even though it does make for a long day, would particularly recommend the additional section from Kobarid to Trnovo Ob Soci following closely the Soca.
Helpful to note there are now plenty of ATMS in Kobarid so no difficulty in obtaining cash. If opting for the upgrade to Dobra Vila, although the restaurant is high end there was no requirement for formal attire; Slovenia on the whole being less formal of dress than Italy.
The name of the trip, Hidden Italy and Slovenia, is well chosen. This area is still being discovered and makes for secluded hiking among beautiful alpine fields of wildflowers and along the indescribably turquoise, emerald, aqua blue Soca River. The backdrop of ancient civilizations, brutal civil and world wars, and fairly recent independence add to the sense of discovery for those (like us) who are not familiar with this area. There is great variation in the walks which, being a group of 9 people, ages 25 - 65, was greatly appreciated. It's nice to stay 2 nights, 2 nights, and then 3 nights at the hotels. We upgraded to the Dobra Vila in Bovec for the last 3 nights and were so glad we did. This is a gorgeous, newly renovated, wonderfully designed and comfortably furnished hotel, just a bit on the outskirts of the town. Dobra-Vila also has a top-knotch chef with food as beautiful as it is delicious, starting with breakfast buffet and the freshly cooked eggs to the 4-course dinners featuring local ingredients and wines from their own cellars. Additional note for foodies who want a once-in-a-lifetime experience - in Kobarid we ate at Hisa Franko with chef Ana Roz (see Netflix Chef's Table, season 2, episode 5 for her story) but given its world-class status you will need to make reservations well in advance.
And the review wouldn't be complete without a huge shout-out to Inntravel's team of professionals who are highly skilled, knowledgeable, responsive, and professional. This was our third trip with them and I look forward to many more self-guided hiking tours!
The walks were interesting and varied - the best being the ascent of Mt Matajur and the hike up the Lepena Valley. The Hotel Locanda Al Castello in Cividale and the Hotel Dobra Vila in Bovec were both absolutely superb. We had breakfast and dinner on the patio in Bovec every day which was wonderful. The logistics worked perfectly.
Great holiday, countryside is stunning and weather was beautiful. Good mix of longer walks between hotels with optional rest/shorter days in between. Slovenia is a little outdoor activity gem, especially liked Bovec.
We thoroughly enjoyed this holiday and found this part of Slovenia to be stunningly attractive with mountain ranges around you whilst you walk within wild-flower meadows. The Soca river, with its aquamarine colour, is not only beautiful to look at but has lots of activity on its fast current (kyaks and rafts) to keep you interested. We are so glad that we added the two-day Venice trip and upgraded to the Dobra Vila in Bovec.
INNTRAVEL NOTE: These customers enjoyed our Venice City add-on at the Hotel Ca’ Nigra before our Hidden Italy and Slovenia self-guided walking holiday (upgrade option).
Our highlight was the walk up the Lepena Valley. There was no one else around and the bird song was amazing. We actually got a taxi out to Camp Klin, had a coffee, walked up and down the valley, had lunch at Camp Klin and then walked back into Bovec. The weather forecast was not so good for the afternoon and we wanted to make sure we used the best part of the day in the Lepena Valley. It made for an interesting exercise reading the trip notes backwards, but it worked well for us!
Slovenia is a beautiful country and the combination of the mountain ranges and the rivers and waterfalls made for wonderful scenery. All the people we dealt with were really friendly and helpful. The Dobra Vila is a very stylish art deco hotel and we were happy to spend the longest time there. The owner and all his staff went out of their way to make our stay with them very special. We would love to return.
We had a wonderful holiday with very little stress! Lots of good food, scenery, walking, and history. Flowers were wonderful, as was the weather.
We enjoyed all three of the hotels that you had chosen for us, all of which gave us a friendly welcome. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of historical interest that the Soca Valley holds. In Bovec, we took the Dobra Vila option with an extra night and dined there very well for three of our four nights in that town. It was an oasis of calm, style and understated luxury - in fact great! On the other night we ate well at the Gostisce Martinov Hram and also liked the very attentive, friendly staff there. The whole holiday was a great success, helped by excellent weather for mid-September. The whole Slovenian experience was delightful: friendly, unpretentious, well-organised, diligent hosts in an Alpine setting with added warmth.
A wonderful holiday with spectacular walks along the spectacular Soca Valley and opportunities to learn fascinating WW1 history. Weather conditions meant that the Day 2 Cividale to Kobarid walk was unfortunately not possible but having transferred with our luggage to Kobarid, we adapted our Kobarid experience with a substitute circular walk suggested by the very helpful Tourist Info Office from the town to Trnovo and back. The Dobra Vila upgrade was fantastic; incredible restaurant though otherwise, restaurant-choice in Bovec was a little limited. As the weather picked up towards the end of the week, the scenery just got more spectacular as the bikers were then out in force and always in earshot, unfortunately often interrupting the peace and quiet of the beautiful valley and surrounding roads.
The walk from Italy into Slovenia was really amazing. But all the walks were wonderful. The remoteness and solitude was also very enjoyable. I would thoroughly recommend Inntravel and this holiday in particular.
Take advantage of water sports on Soca River and cable car in Bovec to access higher level walking routes.
Whilst the Julian Alps and this part of Slovenia are very beautiful the walks on this holiday fell well short of that which we have come to expect and cherish from Inntravel over the past 10 years.
We are extremely sorry you did not enjoy this holiday as much as other customers have done, or as much as the other holidays you have done with us.
This was our fifth Inntravel holiday and the most amazing for stunning scenery and relaxing accommodation (we did the upgrade to Dobra Vila in Bovec). On our walks we were accompanied by birdsong and we passed through flowery meadows and well-kept villages. There was the beautiful River Soca, some rickety suspension bridges, gorges and waterfalls.
The climb to Monte Matajur was easier than we had expected but the descent made us realise why this is a grade 2/3 walk and not a grade 2 as our previous holidays have been. If we were to do it again we would take up the suggestion of a taxi from Livek, as there is long section on a minor road going steeply downhill for 4km. We would thoroughly recommend the historical trail around Kobarid and a longer visit to the museum. On our last two days in Bovec we opted for the shorter of the optional walks and did another one recommended by the tourist office, as the weather was very hot.
Many highlights - the location, ambience and food at the Locanda Al Castello, everything at the Dobra Vila, the first 65% of the first walk, hearing the sounds of the cuckoo in several quiet rural spots. As enthusiasts about history, we found the Kobarid museum and the historical trail fascinating (if depressing). The walk to and from the Kluze fortress was beautiful, and again there was plenty of historical material to study at the fortress.
