Venice

Venice or ‘La Serenissima’ is the jewel in Italy’s crown. While many Italian cities, at one time in their history, eventually came under the despotic rule of one man or one family, this never happened to Venice. During the centuries when much of the mainland was in a state of turbulence, the Venetians were left alone to build their floating city, which is one of the reasons for its very special atmosphere.
From the Basilica to the excellent art galleries and churches via the canals and bridges, the city offers a fascinating new sight at every turn. Between your cultural forays, browse in the many shops or just relax in a café in the Piazza San Marco.


Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
    Venice will seduce at any time of year, particularly in winter (arguably the best time to visit), when the crowds have mostly disappeared. Our notes guide you through its myriad of rios and campos but don’t worry if you get lost, as this is a bonus in Venice – there is always something else to discover around each corner.

    Venice is one of the few cities in the world that can be truly described as unique, comprising 117 islets divided by 100 canals and linked by some 400 bridges. Take a gondola ride down the Grand Canal, lined with magnificent marble palaces; linger on the wonderful Piazza San Marco with a coffee; explore St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace; or travel out to one of the other islands in the lagoon.
  • Glass-blowing, lace & festivals
    Two of the islands on the lagoon are Murano, where you can visit the glassworks, and Burano, the speciality of which is handmade lace.

    Besides a great selection of quirky shops and designer boutiques, Venice is home to the famous Rialto markets. At the Farmers’ Market, you’ll see seasonal local produce – look out for white asparagus from Giare, salt marsh honey, strawberries, Lison-Pramaggiore wine, artisan cheeses and a real delicacy such as the castraure, the first buds of Sant’Erasmo violet artichoke, cultivated on the Venetian lagoon island of Sant’Erasmo.

    Carnivals and festivals – the most spectacular of which are often on the water – add colour and vibrancy to the city throughout the year, and not an evening goes by without a concert somewhere.
