Lapland Activity Week

Ylläs, deep within the Arctic Circle
Holiday information
Nights: 7
Meals: dinner & breakfast every day
Start: Sunday
Included extras: 3 guided excursions; 1 cross-country skiing lesson; 1 day's cross-country ski hire; free use of cross-country trails

Our included activities offer a real Arctic experience, and you'll learn a little about Lapland and its people from your guide as you explore. The rest of your time is free to spend as you like – you can try your hand at ice-fishing, borrow one of the hotel’s kick-sleds, or explore more of the cross-country ski domain. Be sure to reserve some energy for the evenings, though, so that you can keep an eye out for the Northern Lights.

You visit a nearby husky farm where you are introduced to these wonderful animals and get to learn about what makes a good sled dog, how they are trained and how to handle them. You then enjoy the thrills of dog-sledding for yourself as you whizz through the snow-clad forest on a half-day expedition, hearing only the sled runners swooshing over the snow and the eager panting of the dogs. (Sled drivers must be over 18 years of age.)

To learn more about these snow-covered landscapes and to see the forest from a whole new perspective, you also get the chance to hop on board a snowmobile with a guide for another remarkable trip through the forest that is home to a number of reindeer and their herder. This is a completely different experience but no less fun, as you head out across the fells and over frozen wetlands, seeing the forest flash by on a memorable half-day trip which also includes a warming lunch of hot soup by an open fire.

Snowshoeing is arguably the best way to appreciate the utter stillness and tranquillity of Lapland’s unique wintry environment. During the walk across the virgin snow of one of Ylläs' seven panoramic fjells your guide will help you to identify bird and animal tracks in the snow (and, with luck, lead you to one or two of the creatures who made them) and teach you a little about the local flora and fauna. You break for a picnic lunch before the second leg of the tour back to the hotel.

Cross-country skiing

To give you a flavour of the joys of cross-country skiing, we include a 90-minute lesson in the basics of this fun and easy-to-learn sport with one of the hotel's own instructors. Ski hire is included for the day so that afterwards you can explore some of the many trails, which start from the hotel door and lead into the pristine surrounding countryside.
