Historic Évora

The vast, sun-kissed plains of the Alentejo – Portugal’s largest but least-populated region – are peppered with reminders of the country’s colourful history, but few places bear more compelling witness to the past than the walled city of Évora.

Sitting proud on these tranquil plains, Évora offers a wonderful contrast to the better-known cities you visit on our Cities, Palaces & Wine journey.

As you explore its delightful tangle of Moorish alleyways, using our specially created walking trail to guide you between the beautifully tiled buildings and whitewashed houses, you discover treasures that trace an evocative timeline from Roman occupation to the Golden Age: wonder at the 2nd-century Temple of Diana; visit the eerie Chapel of Bones; and meander between the medieval cathedral cloisters. Afterwards, enjoy a dish of hearty Alentejan cuisine at one of the city’s welcoming restaurants, or pay a visit to the nearby Cartuxa winery to learn more about the region’s thriving wine-making industry.

Lisbon to Évora: 1.5hrs by train

Today you leave the Portuguese capital behind, travelling east by train into the very different landscape of the Alentejo plains. Your destination is the walled city of Évora, where you spend two nights at the superlative Albergaria do Calvário. The journey is only a short one and we recommend catching a morning train to enable you to begin your exploration of the city the same day (see day 11 for further details).

Thanks to our self-guided walking notes, this fascinating city reveals its innermost treasures: the 13th-century Gothic and Romanesque cathedral; the superb Temple of Diana which has stood since the 2nd century AD, withstanding the great earthquake of 1755; the Roman Baths; an exquisitely preserved collection of 16th-century mansions and palaces; and the macabrely-compelling Chapel of Bones constructed from 5,000 skeletons. You are in the heart of Alentejo wine country, so we also suggest a visit to the historic Cartuxa winery on the outskirts of Évora – producer of the renowned Pêra Manca red – for a tour and tasting.

The Albergaria do Calvário is ideally located for exploring Évora. Your stay here is on a bed-and-breakfast basis, leaving you free to take your pick of the city’s many restaurants

Once a 16th-century olive oil mill, the Albergaria do Calvário is now a stylish hotel that enjoys an excellent location just inside the medieval city walls. The rooms are bright and comfortable and there is a lounge/bar on the ground floor where the delicious breakfast featuring fresh, organic, and locally-grown products is served.

Our included rooms are spacious and come with bright, modern furnishings. Room facilities include air conditioning, TV, minibar and safety deposit box, while the en-suite bathrooms are equipped with baths or showers.

Each of the upgraded suites is slightly different, though most have a separate bedroom and living room. All are very spacious, with ample room to relax. The facilities mirror those of the Prestige rooms.

Of the palaces in Sintra, they varied a lot in appeal. Monserrat was the best, with the best garden and beautiful architecture. Biester came a close second.

The walking notes suggest going to the Moorish castle first, and then on to Pena Palace. We went directly to the Pena Palace at 9.30 by tuktuk, and the crowds were already large. By midday they were horrendous. The Pena Palace was not very attractive, made worse by the press of crowds. We would have prefered to give it a miss.

Great restaurant in Sintra, just by the Lawrence : Romaria de Baco, very popular, best to book.

In Evora, we had a great meal at Bistro Barāo, again best to book.
