Walking holidays in Portugal, Madeira & the Azores

Intricately painted tiles, storks nesting on sea stacks, colourful flowers and, of course, famous wines, mean that our walking holidays in Portugal are about more than walking. We actively encourage you to delight in the details – an elegant manor house, the sunlight dancing on the sea – this is what Inntravel holidays are all about. And since you’re not with a group, and have no luggage (we transfer it between hotels), you can take your time to enjoy a walking holiday that's worth it.

Top pick for 2025

Porto was recently named Europe's Best Emerging Culinary City, so we've picked it as a top destination for foodies in 2025. Delight in the likes of bacalhau à brás (salt cod, potatoes & eggs) and francesinha, before pairing it with a wine tasting in the Douro Valley.

Walk Portugal your way

Find the right holiday for you

Are our walking holidays in Portugal right for you?

When it comes to walking, Portugal caters particularly well for those looking for easy-to-moderate or moderate walking. To be sure of choosing the walking holiday in Portugal that is right for you, read how we grade them below. For great flexibility and the chance to mix walking and sightseeing as the mood takes you, choose a centre-based holiday (take your pick of the Algarve, western Madeira or the Azores).
  • Looking for effortless walking in Portugal? Choose from our short breaks featuring Lisbon, Porto, or the northerly Minho region. These getaways combine culture and countryside, giving you the opportunity to break up your sightseeing with a short, gentle stroll or two.
  • Our grade 1-2 walking holidays in Portugal each reveal a very different side to the country – from the wild, western Algarve to the palaces of Sintra, and the little-known Arrábida Natural Park near Lisbon – but what they have in common is their relatively easy routes (think 5-15km per day on gently undulating terrain) and their many opportunites to pause: to visit a fascinating site, take in the scenery, or taste-test the delicious regional cuisine.
  • Expect to cover approximately 10-15km a day on our grade 2 walking holidays in Portugal, and to be challenged in places by both the terrain and elevation. Of course, your experience will be unique to the destination you select – visit the Douro Valley to traverse rolling vineyards, the Azores to take in crater lakes, hot springs, and mist-shrouded peaks, and Madeira for glorious flora and superb levada walks. The choice is yours!
  • Explore Portugal’s only national park on our grade 2-3 route, following pilgrim paths and Roman roads through its rugged but beautiful landscapes. As you journey south through the park, on routes that typically extend between 10-20km per day, you'll face significant ascent and descent, but the views make it all worthwhile.
  • Our flexible holidays in western Madeira and the Algarve give a variety of walking and sightseeing options, each one accessible either from the door of your hotel or by using your included hire car. Expect mostly easy coastal and inland routes in the Algarve, with Madeira offering options to suit walkers of all levels and interests.

Why choose Inntravel?

Traditionally a nation of great explorers, Portugal is itself a fascinating country to discover - with stunning walking routes and spellbinding vistas. Whether you choose to visit Madeira's flower-filled landscapes, admire the castles and gardens of Sintra, hike the untamed landscapes of the Peneda-Geres National Park, or uncover the quiet side of the Algarve, our self-guided holidays give you the chance to do it your way.
