Siena City Add-On

A Tuscan gem

The perfect add-on to another Inntravel holiday in Tuscany, Siena is a compact city set amid archetypal Tuscan countryside. What’s more, you’ll stay in a former Renaissance palace and can follow our notes for a self-guided walking tour to explore this often-overlooked gem of a city.

Holiday information

Siena

Climb to the top of the iconic Torre del Mangia and you’ll be greeted by views of the scallop-shaped piazza of Il Campo far below; of Siena’s distinctive, black-and-white-striped cathedral; and of a jumble of brown tiled roofs enclosed within medieval ramparts, on the other side of which lies a patchwork of olive groves and vineyards.
Siena is one of those cities where, thanks to its compactness, you can happily while away a day following your feet down narrow streets lined with tall, Gothic buildings of orange-brown bricks and elaborate windows. The medieval charm is reason enough to visit the city, but if you are interested in art, there is even more to captivate, not least Lorenzetti’s Effects of Good and Bad Government, and works by Donatello, Ghiberti and Jacopo della Quercia.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • An introduction
The focal point of the city is the Campo, a huge piazza where public meetings and executions were once held and which nowadays is lined with pavement cafés. Dominating one side of it is the Gothic Palazzo Pubblico, the rooms of which are adorned with frescoes such as Lorenzetti’s Effects of Good and Bad Government and Simone Martini’s Virgin in Majesty.

Many more magnificent works of art are housed in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, the Pinacoteca and the Duomo (cathedral), whose masterpieces by Donatello, Ghiberti and Jacopo della Quercia are complemented by a wonderfully elaborate marble floor.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
To help you make the most of your time in the city, we provide notes for a self-guided walking tour that takes in the most interesting sights, leading you via mysterious medieval lanes, parts of the old city walls and their gates, as well as a surprising amount of green space with enchanting views.
  • San Gimignano
If you have time, and you haven’t already visited it as part of your walking or cycling holiday, you might like to take a bus to nearby San Gimignano. This well preserved medieval town has a distinctive skyline thanks to its fifteen towers, and you can stroll along the ramparts to enjoy far-reaching views across the surrounding countryside.
