Walking holidays in Italy

Frescoed churches, Renaissance art, family-run vineyards and, of course, mouth-watering cuisine, mean that our walking holidays in Italy are always worth it. We actively encourage you to delight in the details – a graceful villa, a rippling wheat field – this is what Inntravel holidays are all about. And since you’re not with a group, and have no luggage (we transfer it between hotels), you can do just that, following our comprehensive route notes at your own pace.

Recommendation from the Inntravel team

"Puglia's Gargano Peninsula offers just the kind of experience you wouldn't expect from this up-and-coming Italian region. It is very much off the beaten track, with a striking mix of ancient forest, emerald seas, and a sacred pilgrim town."

Top pick for 2025

2025 is a Jubilee Year for pilgrims visiting Italy, and to celebrate this we've picked St Francis' Way as one of our top 10 holidays for the year. Follow in the footsteps of Italy's patron saint as you walk from Assisi to Spoleto, staying in hotels that offer true Umbrian hospitality.

How our walking holidays in Italy are graded

Inntravel has been offering Italian walking holidays since 1994, meaning we know the best regions, the most scenic paths and the friendliest hotels. We cater for all levels, from gentle strolls to high-mountain hikes – including in the Dolomites and Cottian Alps. So decide what grade is best suited to you, and whether you’d like to walk from hotel to hotel or from a single centre, and take it from there.
  • On our gentle stroll in the Italian Dolomites, you'll cover between 2-8.5km per day with few ascents or descents. An excellent local transport network allows you to get up high without the need for strenous climbs, paving the way for easy walks on the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), Europe's largest high mountain plateau. A number of lower-level trails also give you the option of exploring the valleys below.
  • You don't have to be a seasoned hiker to enjoy our grade 1-2 Italian walks, which take in a host of enticing – and very different – landscapes. Discover pristine nature reserves in western Sicily, the celebrated hill-top towns of Tuscany, or the quieter side of Lake Garda. As a general rule, expect between 5-15km each day – with the occasional hill thrown in.
  • You'll be challenged in places on our grade 2 explorations of Italy, but enjoy superb views. Whether you're walking between the timeless villages of the Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast, or uncovering the hidden highlights of Puglia's little-known Gargano Peninsula, there are some remarkable sights to see. Days typically consist of 10-15km, across varied terrain with regular ascents and descents.
  • Think rugged terrain that challenges and rewards in equal measure. Choose from inviting trails in the unspoiled Apennine Mountains, a breathtaking walk amid the Dolomites' Three Peaks, and a highly fulfilling journey along the Via degli Dei between Bologna and Florence. Distances of 7-20km per day are usual, and routes involve significant ascent and descent.
  • Our most thrilling walks in Italy involve full days on the trails, more challenging terrain, and testing ascents and descents, but there's still time to appreciate your surroundings. These could include the Dolomites' highest peaks, the enchanting Cottian Alps – close to the French border, or even the spectacular mountains of the Mont Blanc massif.
  • Some of our Italian walking holidays offer a choice of easier or harder routes, so that you can tailor most days to your requirements. Among our most flexible breaks are an exploration of the Italian Riviera's quieter side – with the chance to visit the famous Cinque Terre villages – and a discovery of South Tyrol's tranquil Senales Valley.
