We had a wonderful holiday in the Black Forest. Despite last minute quarentine restrictions, Inntravel were able to change our travel plans so we could still go and made the new arrangements as easy as possible for us. The walking was wonderful, and we enjoyed all the routes given. The only challenge was the unexpected heat but walking through the shady forest was an absolute delight. All the hotels had lovely situations and great food. We had booked a balcony room at Waldhotel Fehrenbach and were initially shown to one without a balcony. The hotel was unwilling to change our room, but when we contacted Inntravel they were immediately able to get us moved. Our new room was wonderful and we would definitely recommend the extra for a balcony, as the location of the hotel and views make it worthwhile. Overall this was a lovely holiday and the small, family run hotels had made great efforts to be safe for guests as well as welcoming.
Many highlights... being up high with lovely views, in different parts of the forest, unexpectedly beautiful little lakes and we saw some great birds that were new to us. So do take binoculars! Excellent waymarking and the directions were easy to follow and very accurate, we never felt in danger of getting lost. The balance between ascents and descents we found pretty good... enough to feel we'd been challenged occasionally but nothing that was too demanding. On Day 1 we opted for the Feldberg-Falkau circuit, the most challenging of the options and it was really great to get up high. We went up in the cable car at the end which was nice. On Day 3 we walked the Ravenna Gorge which was beautiful. A bit busy at the Alte Steige... probably the only touristy bit we experienced, but it was just a 'honey pot' for tourists and very localised. For us both the Hotel Peterle and the Waldhotel were fantastic, nice rooms and excellent gourmet food, wine and service and really friendly.
The trip was perfect. We enjoyed the local hotels and local food and wine. We took challenging hikes each day in beautiful settings. Our favorite hike was from the Waldhotel to Hotel Sonne because that hike had the most beautiful views and took us far from the tourist path. We will always remember the sound of cow bells and church bells in the distance. We also enjoyed the hike from Hotel Sonne into Freiburg. In Freiburg, the farmers' market around the Munster was amazing!

We had a wonderful holiday with blue skies every day except one. Travel arrangements all went as planned. Very relaxed. We were able to see the wind bands performing in Titisee at the start of the season.
Another excellent walking holiday with great hotels and some wonderful food, very interesting walks especially as the weather was warm and dry. Freiberg well worth a visit lots of history and very accessible.
Great detailed route guidance!
We thoroughly enjoyed both our walks, but not having been to Norway before, Senja was magnificent. Every walk was a highlight, mostly taking one to a summit from where the views were incredible. Even though you often walked back down the same way, we didn't mind as one kept stopping to admire the view and appreciate the beauty. From the top of Barden we had a good view of Husoy, the pretty island we visited on the way to Mefjord Brygge. Because the walks were relatively short, we fitted sometimes 3 in one day, and they were all worthwhile. A truly outstanding week, so well put together, and highly recommended especially as it was so peaceful and at times you felt you had the island to yourself.
The Black Forest was extremely enjoyable too, the highlight there being the incredible hospitality and gourmet meals at Hotel Peterle and Waldhotel Fehrenbach. Josef went out of his way to make our stay memorable. Beautiful walks cleverly focusing on the beauty of the area.
Once again an excellent holiday in everyway. Thank you Inntravel.
INNTRAVEL NOTE: These customers combined our 'Senja - an Arctic Island' holiday with 'A Walk in the Black Forest'
Another excellent walk. Food at the Hotel Fehrenbach was superb and bedrooms at the Peterle particularly were lovely.
The Black Forest provides stunning views and all the walks ensured a variety of attractive scenery.
We liked the area and the walks very much!
Walks can be easily adapted if it is very hot. Use of the excellent train network enable flexibility - a bargain. Freiburg well worth a visit - easily reached by train. Worth arriving before 1230 on a Thursday when Hotel closed, to avoid anxiety re. Key code.
If weather hot take plenty of water with you as hard to find replenishment on some walks.
Highlights - being surrounded by clouds of swallowtail butterflies at some of the high points on the routes - Hinterwaldkopf memorial & between the observation Turm & start of the Rappenecker Hof path; unexpected meetings and conversations with other walkers ( e.g. an encounter in an unknown spot between a confused Polish cyclist and myself holding your map, managing beween us to locate our respective positions - in Russian! ); the general feeling of peace & quiet, being at one with nature in beautiful surroundings - a cross between " The Sound of Music " & Fraser's Ridge from "Outlander" and a sense of achievement in taking on this new experience, alone, at the age of 75 (I had been doing some serious fitness training for 5 months in preparation).
Another wonderful holiday with hotels, food and walks all well up to the standard that we've come to expect from Inntravel.
Great holiday. Fabulous walks, lovely hotels and delicious food. The gourmet dinner on our second night was particularly superb. We loved Freiburg too.
A very good holday with walks over surprisingly varied terrain. It's worth considering an extra night at the first hotel to have a warm-up day before tackling the Feldberg. And walking into Freiburg makes for a great finish. When the hotels are busy be prepared for the meals taking two hours or more - perhaps it's a German thing!
Fine walking holiday staying in excellent friendly family run hotels with good scenery and weather.
We found the walking very enjoyable with good food and friendly hotels, particularly the warm welcome of Tobias at Hotel Peterle. At Alpersbach the hotel was quiet during the afternoon. We found an alternative for afternoon refreshments a five minute stroll up the road (Gasthaus zum Engel).
Recommendation: Pack swimwear for the woodland lake on day 2 - would have loved to go for a dip!
Hotel Peterle was fabulous, the welcome, service and food were outstanding.
I took my 16 year old son on this walking holiday. It's the perfect antidote to the always-connected world, giving us time to appreciate the quiet of the forest, spectactular viers and a 'Herzlich Wilkommen' at each of the hotels and Hütte that we stopped at. A special mention to Joseph at the Waldhotel who is extremely passionate about showing the best from the area and comes up with some amazing food combinations.
The whole package was one big highlight. As you can see from my responses it met, and mostly exceeded, our expectations. The day after we arrived home we were both leafing through the brochures to plan next year's trip.
I was really nervous about stepping out into the hills and the forest on my own so I found it really helpful to draw my routes on the map the day before I walked. It helped me familiarise myself with place names and distances. I also tried to find the beginning of my walk the day before, so I knew I could set off on the right foot the next day. I read the notes the day before too, picking out landmarks that might be useful.
Waldhotel Fehrenbach was in a beautiful spot and a bit closer to nature than the others, and our host was so skilled and entertaining. Paying extra for balconies is definitely worth the money.
This was my first holiday abroad on my own, and it was a good choice - it was nerve wracking at times but I felt well-supported while at the same time satisfied that I'd undertaken some challenging things on my own and developed some travelling confidence.
We found the detailed notes and maps very helpful. A highlight were the wonderful wild flower meadows. The food in the area was delicious beautifully presented and wonderful quality.
A great holiday that we loved. We will definitely be back for more.
