The Hill-Top Towns of Tuscany

Landscapes immortalised by artists
You stay in four high-quality hotels of great character. In Colle Val d'Elsa, you can choose to upgrade to the Relais della Rovere. In Siena, we usually feature the Hotel Garden, which has a pool, but if you would prefer to stay more centrally, you can opt for the Palazzo Ravizza.

Hotel San Lino (4*), Volterra

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Hotel San Lino
Located in the western part of the town, this hotel is a good base from which to explore Volterra. There is a good-sized outdoor pool in which to relax at the end of the day. Take your pick of the local restaurants using our recommendations as a guide (pay locally).

Hotel Bel Soggiorno (3*), San Gimignano

Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

Hotel Bel Soggiorno
The Gigli family have owned this much-loved hotel for several generations, and have created a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Centrally located within the town, the hotel nevertheless offers some fine views across the vineyards below the town, some of the best of which are enjoyed by the acclaimed restaurant, which draws a loyal local following. (Restaurant closed Wednesdays, leaving you free to dine elsewhere.)

Vecchia Cartiera (3*), Colle Val d'Elsa

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Vecchia Cartiera
A comfortable hotel built on the site of an old paper mill. There is a spacious lounge in which to relax. Take your pick of the local restaurants using our recommendations as a guide (pay locally).

Relais della Rovere (4*), Colle Val d'Elsa

Optional upgrade
Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

Relais della Rovere
Located on the outskirts of the town, this elegant hotel – standing in its own gardens and with a pool – has been converted from a former cardinal's residence and is a stylish blend of ancient and modern, with individually decorated bedrooms.

Hotel Garden (4*), Siena

Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Hotel Garden
Created from the former summer home of an aristocratic family, the Hotel Garden stands on a hill to the north-west of the old town within its own attractive, shady gardens (complete with outdoor pool) and with views over Siena's rooftops and the surrounding countryside. We include superior rooms. The centre of Siena is walkable from here or you may prefer to take a bus (pay locally).

Palazzo Ravizza (3*), Siena

Alternative accommodation
Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Palazzo Ravizza
This Renaissance mansion makes a wonderful base for exploration of Siena, located as it is in a quiet square just a few minutes' walk from the historic centre. The interior retains many grand original features, while outside the flower-filled gardens look out on to the countryside.

Hotel Il Guelfo Bianco (3*), Florence

Optional add-on
Meal arrangements: breakfast only

Hotel Il Guelfo Bianco
The Guelfo Bianco is a very high-quality 3-star hotel converted from an attractive 15th-century town house. A wonderful blend of old and new, it is exquisitely furnished, with the walls of the individually decorated bedrooms and public areas hung with original paintings by well-known modern artists. Like our other hotel, the charming 3-star Alba, it makes an excellent base from which to explore.
