Turin

Turin is a graceful city with a rich and colourful history. It boasts a truly splendid Baroque centre whose grid-pattern streets, wide boulevards and elegant squares are lined with sumptuous mansions, public buildings and churches. There is no shortage of culture, either, with various wonderful art galleries and other excellent museums which are well worth spending your time visiting.
Turin has several world-renowned claims to fame, including Fiat and Ferrari cars; the Holy Shroud; delicious nocciola chocolate; and the Mole Antonelliana, a monumental landmark completed in 1889. Originally conceived as a synagogue, it now houses the National Museum of Cinema and is the tallest museum in the world, dominating the city skyline from every viewpoint.

Sightseeing

  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
    Turin has a rich history and an elegant centre where you can admire the sublime Baroque architecture. Using our detailed notes as your guide, you can head along the Corso Re Umberto, following wide streets and boulevards with countless porticoes that lead to squares lined with grand mansions and churches.

    The city boasts many world-renowned museums and art galleries, such as Galleria Sabauda with works by artists including van Dyck and Rembrandt, while the Egyptian Museum has the most complete collection of Egyptian artefacts in the world after Cairo. The Duomo di San Giovanni is home to the famous Holy Shroud. It is only brought out on special occasions, though a photographic replica is on display.
  • Parco del Valentino
    Along the banks of the Po River you will find the peaceful Parco del Valentino, including the Castello del Valentino, a favourite retreat of Maria Cristina of France. Here you can take boat trips along the river and stroll along the nature trails through the woods that cover these panoramic hills.
  • Eataly Market
    Turin is the also the home of the Slow Food movement which was founded in the nearby town of Bra, and no visit would be complete without exploring the magnificent market, called ‘Eataly’, which is devoted to food and wine. After grazing, tasting and shopping your way round, relax over lunch or refreshments in one of the many varied and excellent trattorie, restaurants and bars as you watch the world go by.
