Holiday information

A walking holiday in the Picos de Europa

Green and unspoiled, Asturias is dominated by the magnificent mountain range of the Picos de Europa, just a few miles inland from the Atlantic Coast of quiet beaches, sweeping bays and enticing fishing ports. There is a distinctly Celtic feel to the region and its generous people – cider is served in the bars and restaurants, and traditional music, including haunting bagpipe tunes, played at the fiestas. Walking amid the mountains here is a magical experience.
This classic mountain route takes you through some of Spain’s most splendidly dramatic landscapes, from the wild and remote-feeling Picos de Europa Mountains, which shelter rare birds and animals, to the rugged Atlantic Coast with its fishing ports and sandy bays, then west to the Sueve Sierra, where you finish with three nights at the charming Posada del Valle. Besides the scenery, one of the holiday’s greatest features is the opportunity to stay in authentic Asturian casonas – atmospheric village houses offering delicious traditional cooking, charming accommodation and a genuine welcome in inspirational surroundings.

Itinerary

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • The average maximum daytime temperatures and monthly rainfall relate to the nearest weather station and are intended as a guide only.

Late May, June and September see the most settled weather, but conditions are changeable, and there is always the chance of rain whenever you travel - the landscape wouldn't be so green otherwise. Fortunately, rain showers don't tend to last long, usually giving over quickly to sunshine.
    Average temperatures and rainfall
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

  • Arrival in Arena de Cabrales
Night 1: at Hotel Picos de Europa (the first of two nights here).
As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Linear walk via the Cares Gorge: up to 22km, 7.5hrs
After a short transfer (included) to Poncebos, you walk out and back along the spectacular Cares Gorge, also known as the ‘Divine Gorge’, surrounded by towering, craggy limestone peaks. Initially, the path remains high above the river, but as you walk along the gorge you gradually descend towards the water. As you approach the village of Caín, the gorge opens up to reveal an unrivalled view of jagged peaks. As this is a linear there-and-back walk, you can return from any point.
(We also offer several other routes following paths leading into the high mountains for views of the majestic peaks, including the famous orange-hued Naranjo de Bulnes. A head for heights is required for some of these routes).
Linear walk via the Cares Gorge: up to 22km

  • Arenas de Cabrales to Bobia: 18km, 6.5hrs
Leaving Arenas, you are transferred west to the sleepy village of Pandiello for one of the best and most varied walks of the week: after heading initially along country lanes and tracks across the farming lowlands, you rise steadily to reach the dramatic Buitres Pass where indigenous wild Asturcon ponies roam. The next remote section skirts the base of the impressive Gustaselvin Sierra. Finally, after climbing to a high pass, you descend along the edge of a beautiful, steeply cut valley. Your destination is Bobia and the Hotel Rexacu in the heart of the mountains.

Looking across the valley, on the route from Arenas de Cabrales to Bobia
  • Covadonga Lakes to Bobia: 14km, 5hrs
For your full day in Bobia, we suggest a fabulous route that starts at the Lakes of Covadonga (taxi transfer included). After exploring the area around the lakes and maybe calling into the Visitor Centre, you descend from the rocky higher reaches of the mountains along a mixture of tracks and paths through a stunning landscape of peaks and valleys and seemingly deserted farms and barns. These upper pastures are still worked, however, and you will encounter grazing animals.
    Covadonga Lakes to Bobia: 14km
Lake Enol, one of the two glacial lakes of Covadonga
  • Bobia to Vibaño: 13.5km, 5hrs
Starting with a transfer to the mountain hamlet of Cuerres, the walk to Vibaño and the Montaña Mágica follows part of a centuries-old way, said to date from pre-Roman times and which in the Middle Ages linked Llanes on the coast with the monastery at Covadonga. You enjoy broad views of the Atlantic as you cross the ridge which separates the Picos from the coastal plain. A cobbled Roman road then descends into a secret valley, from where you rise once more into the hills on the other side.
    Bobia to Vibaño: 13.5km
  • Choice of walks from Vibaño to La Pereda: both 19km

    Low-level route: 19km, 6hrs
The first option is a relatively gentle route which hugs the edge of the mountain that backs the coastal plain and links a number of pretty villages.

    Mountain route: 19km, 6.5hrs
The second route, which is more demanding and requires good weather, heads up into the mountains for one final time along a secluded high valley, before the coast is finally revealed as you leave the peaks behind. Your destination is the Posada de Babel, near La Pereda, where you stay two nights. To take out some of the descent at the beginning of the walk, we recommend asking your hosts for a transfer down into Vibaño itself.
Low-level route from Vibaño to La Pereda
    Low-level route: 19km
    Mountain route: 19km
  • Choice of walks from La Pereda: 4.5km to 17.5km

Linear walk via Camino de Santiago: 15km, 5hrs; longer option: 17.5km, 5.5hrs
Today there are two coastal walks to choose from, both using sections of the Camino de Santiago, approaching the picturesque fishing port of Llanes from opposite directions and linking pretty villages along the way.

Linear walk via country lanes: 4.5km, 1.5hrs
Alternatively, stroll along country lanes from La Pereda to Llanes, from whose beaches or cliff-top path you can look back across the terrain you have covered on this splendid exploration of Asturias. Return by taxi (or on foot, retracing your route).

Linear walk via country lanes: 4.5km
  • Travel to Collia
You can choose to travel with your luggage to La Posada del Valle in Collia, but we highly recommend undertaking the journey on foot and by train instead (pay locally for ticket). From Llanes the scenic narrow-gauge railway runs parallel to the coast before heading inland at Ribadesella along the attractive Sella Valley. You alight at Arriondas and then wind your way on foot through the hills to your hotel.
Ribadesella on the route from Llanes to Collia
  • Choice of walks from Collia: 10km to 15km
We include one taxi transfer for your time in Collia; pay locally for any additional taxis or train tickets required.

    Asturias village trail: 15km, 5hrs
This is a stunning walk, direct from the door, taking you into the heart of rural Asturias – through working farms, along verdant river valleys, passing authentic villages with many examples of the Asturian raised granary or hórreo – and a short but pretty train ride in the middle, between the villages of Arriondas and Sevares (Sebares).

    Mirador del Fito: 10km, 3.5hrs; longer option: 14km, 6hrs
This walk starts from the magnificent Fito Viewpoint, reached by taxi. Take time to soak up the panorama of coast and mountains before setting off across the flanks of three small peaks of the Sueve Sierra, enjoying views of the Picos de Europa and of the coast between Llanes and Gijón. You have the option of extending the walk to climb to the summit of Pico Pienzu (1,159 metres), a challenging ascent that is rewarded with another breathtaking panorama. If you are lucky, you may spot wild Asturcon ponies as you walk, but if not the sweeping views more than compensate.

    Playa La Vega: 15km, 5hrs
From the hotel you descend along good tracks across the shaded, forested slopes of the hills of the Sierra del Fito, enjoying good views to the sandy, unspoiled beach of Playa La Vega. Relax on the sand for a while before returning to the Posada by taxi.
Walks around Collia - Mirador del Fito option
    Collia to Arriondas: 5.5km
    Sevares to Collia: 9.5km
    Mirador del Fito: 10km
    Playa La Vega: 15km

This list of flight options should be used as a guide only, and you should check each airline’s website for current routes, frequency and schedules. Not all flights operate daily, and may not run for the entire season. You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time stated in the connecting travel section, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed your accommodation to you. Alternatively, our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice and to make flight bookings for you. We charge £30 per person for our flight booking service (£50 for India and Nepal). Your flights are then covered by our package-booking conditions, which give you greater protection in the event of delay or cancellation, as well as providing ATOL cover.

  • Prices below are based on 2 people travelling together. If you are travelling solo or as a party of 3 or more and our arrangements include a taxi, please contact us for prices; additional passengers often pay less.

Unless otherwise stated, connecting travel by rail or bus tends to be from the city centre station, rather than from its airport, and connections between the two should be paid for locally.

Reviews

If you've experienced this holiday first hand, why not write a review?

FAQs

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • We’ll send you route notes and maps 2-3 weeks before your holiday. The route notes not only contain directions to get from hotel to hotel, but also include practical information about places of interest and eateries along each route, plus cultural information about the area. If/when you are moving between hotels, you leave your luggage in reception as you leave, and it will be transferred ahead to your next accommodation, meaning that all you need to take with you are a camera, sun cream, drinks, food and waterproofs.

For more detailed information, see our walking holidays in Europe page.
  • We can book a wide range of airlines and routes from the UK. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. For Europe and Morocco, there’s a £30 booking fee per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). For India and Nepal, the booking fee is £50 per person. More information on flights >
  • Absolutely! We are experts in tailored rail travel. Making use of sleeper trains or stopovers in cities along the route, we can get you from London to virtually anywhere in mainland Europe. We can even make arrangements to Mallorca, Sicily and Norway with a combination of ferries and rail. Please contact Abi to discuss your plans.
  • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis. More information about how we can tailor holidays for customers outside the UK >
  • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.
  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

You don’t have to buy our policy (if you live outside Europe you’ll definitely need to make your own arrangements, as the policy is only for UK and EU residents), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Spain, but not a visa (if you are travelling after 31 October 2019, see the Brexit question below for more information). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice can be found through the following NHS link: www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/advice/ You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). UK citizens should also obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) by applying at a Post Office or at www.ehic.org.uk. The EHIC allows reciprocal health care but should not be seen as a substitute for travel insurance. EHICs may cease to be valid in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
  • (Castilian) Spanish is one of several official languages; in Catalonia, for example, Catalan has equal status. The currency is the Euro. Spanish time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
  • Even in the event of a no-deal Brexit, it’s been confirmed that flights will continue as normal and that you won’t need a visa to go on holiday (the limit on stays is 90 days). What you will need if there’s no deal is a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of your arrival (extra months added because you renewed your passport early do not count) and adequate travel insurance to cover you for accidents and illness in case reciprocal health deals are suspended. If you are driving while on holiday, you will probably need an International Driving Permit (plus a Green Card if you are taking your own car to Europe). More information >
  • The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.
If you live outside the UK, see our essential travel information page for a list of relevant websites.
  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
