By rail, boat, and road: what are Inntravel Journeys?

Katharine Allerton, 23 March, 2026
All you need to know about our ‘Journey’ holidays – what they mean, where you can go, and why they’re a unique way to explore Europe.

Inntravel may be known primarily for walking holidays, but a large proportion of our itineraries are what we call ‘Journeys.’ In a nutshell, these are classic Inntravel holidays, but your mode of transport between destinations is by something other than walking – be it by train, boat, or car.

Our Journeys are created focusing on the same priorities and inclusions as our walking trips – self-guided exploration, special stays in local (and often family-run) hotels, all the details arranged for you, and flexible itineraries – meaning they are just as much the Inntravel experience. We even include recommended walks and activities you could do, taking in off-the-beaten-path sights and scenery.

The added bonus? Your travel becomes part of the adventure.
A Journey is…

left-quote.pngDiscovery at your own pace – the chance to visit, explore, and really get to know a selection of fascinating destinations. It’s also the space in between… how you travel from place to place and what you see along the way. Some connecting journeys are highlights in their own right – think iconic railways, fjord cruises, and scenic drives – others give you the opportunity to sit back and relax before the next adventure.right-quote-(1).png

What does ‘self-guided’ mean?
We prepare all your final travel documents and post them to you before you leave. As well as any rail tickets and booking confirmations you might need, these documents include detailed route notes, which cover everything from useful phrases to learn and local background information to turn-by-turn route instructions and suggested walking and sightseeing opportunities. The notes have been written by Inntravel staff, who visit our holiday regions regularly to check everything’s in order and keep the notes up to date.

These route notes are your guide, and you use them to find your way, taking everything in at a pace that suits you, with no groups or tour leaders to hurry you along or hold you back. A ‘self-guided’ holiday means you lead the way.
More on the details

Stay somewhere special
Whether a 15th-century mansion near the Alhambra, a boutique stay in Helsinki, or a family-owned hotel in fairy-tale Innsbruck, all our holiday accommodation has been carefully chosen by Inntravel staff for their unique atmospheres and friendly welcomes.

Arrangements, already made
We sort everything for you – from booking hotels and train tickets to room upgrades and flights.

Flexible itineraries
It might be an Inntravel itinerary, but it’s your holiday. Let us know if you’d like to add extra nights to linger for longer in a particularly magical setting or extend your trip with one of our city add-ons.

Along for the ride
The beauty of a Journey is the feeling of travelling through – getting a true sense of a place by sitting back and watching the world go by through the window.
Choosing your Journey
From the Arctic Circle right down to the Adriatic Sea, Inntravel offers a wide range of Journeys.

You may already have a particular destination in mind, but it’s worth noting that many of our itineraries have been devised according to a particular theme, which may help inspire your next holiday. Here are a few of our favourites…
Foodie forays
Sweet and crispy pastries, rich pasta dishes, sumptuous wines, and succulent citrus fruits – it’s safe to say that food is at the heart of many European cultures, making the continent an ideal getaway for those not just with an appetite for adventure, but with an adventurous appetite.

Of course, wherever you go in Europe you’ll find all kinds of mouthwatering dishes and delicacies, but some of our Journeys direct you straight to a region’s gastronomic hotspots from the get-go…

• As you tour Emilia Romagna: Italy’s Food Valley by Rail, wander the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy that is Parma (you’ll likely know the name from its famous cheeses and cured ham) on our food-themed city walk, sample balsamic vinegar in the market of Modena, and indulge on delicious street food, pasta, and Bolognese in – where else! – historic Bologna.

• All the Flavours of Bilbao, San Sebastián & Bordeaux are yours to savour on a six-night itinerary to these three cities, where you can try everything from pintxos and Michelin-star meals in Spain to delectable claret wines in the French wine capital.

• The Porto to Lisbon with Sintra & the Douro Valley by Rail Journey gives you a real taste of Portugal, in every sense of the word. Beginning in Porto – the capital of the port-wine trade – you then head into the Douro Valley, where you stay at a working winery, so you have ample opportunities to try the local wines. And when you reach Lisbon, it’s a must for you to try the iconic pastéis de nata (egg custard tarts)!
Historic highlights
Europe is layered in centuries of stories – of kings and queens, pilgrimages and politicians, battles and empires, and the lives of everyday people from across time. The past seems to live alongside us, and there’s nothing like travel to help you spot it.

• Ever heard of the Habsburgs? This powerful royal family ruled their empire from the city of Vienna for hundreds of years, and their influence can still be seen throughout central Europe today. On our Trail of the Habsburgs holiday, you can explore their legacy in full, travelling along their influential railway line between Vienna and Trieste, admiring the ornate, sunshine-yellow palaces, Viennese-inspired architecture, and charming coffee houses through which they’re remembered in cultural stops along the way.

• Step back into the Golden Age of Spain on our Classical Castile rail holiday. Gaze up at the storybook turrets of the medieval Alcázar in UNESCO-listed Segovia, wander between the timeless, warm-toned buildings of Salamanca – a beautiful and ancient university city – and bask in the grandeur of Madrid, Spain’s splendid capital.

• Berlin, Leipzig, and Dresden are renowned cities whose names ring with history. Memories of the First and Second World Wars, and the Cold War, are visible in fascinating fragments found throughout their streets, but they also echo with the presence of an older past – of connections with figures like Napoleon Bonaparte, Bach, and Augustus ‘The Strong’. Discover the depths of all three cities on our Berlin to Dresden by Rail holiday.
Marvels of nature
We’re all about the breathtaking views on each of our holidays, so, no matter where you go, you’ll be sure to come away enchanted with the scenery.

Whether you’re cruising the fantastical Norwegian coastline by boat before boarding the train on the famously beautiful Flåm Railway or taking a road trip around the striking Peloponnese in your included hire car, you’ll encounter landscapes that appear as if from a dream.
