Lapland Activity Week

Ylläs, deep within the Arctic Circle
Located 150km north of the Arctic Circle, Ylläs (pronounced Oo-las) is the name given to the seven fells which surround the two Lappish villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, which are connected by a scenic road on opposing sides of the Ylläs Fjell. The whole region lies within the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Your hotel, and the Kellokas visitor centre, are to be found in Äkäslompolo on the northern side of the fjell above a frozen lake. Facilities in the village include a post office, general store and a café.

Ylläshumina Hotel, Ylläs

Meal arrangements: dinner & breakfast

Ylläshumina Hotel
The Ylläshumina Hotel is a warm, comfortable oasis in the midst of low, snowy mountains. It dates from 1945, when Aapi Äkäslompolo (the uncle of Meeri Qvist, who runs the hotel with her husband, Toivo) founded the first of Ylläs' hotels here. The wooden construction, with cosy pinewood and modern furnishings in the rooms, is a continuation of a long tradition and the hotel is spread across a number of log cabins, clustered around the reception, restaurant and Humina Pub.

Standard rooms (included)

Standard rooms (included)
Each cabin comprises four bedrooms. One pair shares an entrance at one side, while another pair of bedrooms shares the entrance at the opposite side. Beautifully decorated in light wood, the bedrooms are equipped with a telephone, television, fridge, kettle and hairdryer, and are all on two levels. The main level is furnished with twin beds, a shower room and a drying closet, while there is space on the mezzanine level for a double bed under the eaves (this is better suited to children, rather than adults, because of the low ceiling, although they will need to be old enough to cope with the steep steps up to the mezzanine).

Family apartments (upgrade option)

Family apartments (upgrade option)
Comprising a double room downstairs and twin beds on the upper level, these can sleep four comfortably, with the possibility of adding a fifth bed on the upper level. There is a kitchenette (with a hob and fridge) within the living room, and the apartments have the added bonus of a sauna.

Superior deluxe rooms (upgrade option)

Superior deluxe rooms (upgrade option)
These are beautifully decorated in contemporary Lapp style and consist of a large sitting area with an open fire and a small kitchenette equipped with a sink, fridge and kettle; a separate double bedroom; and a luxury bathroom with two showers.

Superior Suite (upgrade option)

These one-bedroom suites offer yet more luxury at this popular hotel. As with the superior deluxe rooms, they are furnished to a very high standard with the added bonus of a bath tub.

Leisure facilities

Leisure facilities
Facilities include a small lounge, a bar (popular with guests and locals alike) and an open-air hot tub (available certain evenings only) from where, if conditions are right, you can watch the Northern Lights. So integral is sauna to Finnish life that two spacious cabins are devoted to the hotel’s well-appointed men’s and women’s saunas.

One of the hotel’s main focal points is the intimate restaurant, which serves authentic local specialities such as reindeer and perch. There is a special Lapp meal once a week and an extensive three-course buffet on other nights. It is also in the restaurant that the copious buffet breakfast is served each morning. For a lunchtime snack, you can eat in the popular Humina Pub.
