From the Eiger to the Matterhorn

Iconic peaks of the Bernese Oberland & Valais
This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • cross dramatic mountain passes
  • walk the best of the Jungfrau and Matterhorn regions
  • explore classic routes and little-used trails

Between Switzerland’s most famous peaks, the Eiger and the Matterhorn, lies some of the best walking in all of the Alps. The journey from the famous north face to the iconic pyramid of the world’s most recognisable mountain is a thrilling challenge, leading over high-mountain passes on true alpine trails and deep into valleys via lakes, forest and classic mountain villages.

A series of highlights links these two iconic mountains: first a traverse of the Bernese Oberland and then into the mighty Pennine Alps – home to so many 4,000-metre peaks – crossing the Rhône Valley and the heart of Switzerland's wine country on the way.

This is a holiday promising challenge and fulfilment, covering over 150km and at times reaching altitudes of almost 3,000 metres. At such heights, well above the treeline, boulder-strewn scree slopes have a lunar quality to them but you're never far from alpine meadows teeming with flowers and insects, patrolled by whistling marmots on the ground and birds of prey overhead.
